Garden update!
That’s right…potatoes, onion, spinach, and kale are all in the ground and watered. I’m going to start everything else indoors tomorrow! I’m really excited! I believe I’m going to paint the garden….RED!!! I hope it doesn’t end up looking like a Christmas themed garden, though!!
And I’m munching on some more dates + walnuts! The Barhi dates are seriously TO DIE FOR! I am in LOVE! Thank you to those who suggested Brazil nuts, goat cheese, and bleu cheese as date stuffing! YUMMM!
And you may have noticed that I’ve seemed to catch up on EVERYONE’S blogs today! That’s a first in a long time! Amen for Friday’s off (at least most of Fridays!)

Today’s NNM Topic: Gout
Gout is defined by the body’s inability to break down purine in the body. This results in a build up of urate crystals in the joints which results in painful inflammation. Purine is primarily found in foods of animal origin, with the exception of eggs and dairy products. Gout is treated with combination drug and diet therapy and typically affects more men than women.
Nutrition therapy for gout treatment includes:
Limiting protein intake to 10-15% of calories or 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight
50-55% calories from carbohydrate and 30% of calories from fat
Cholesterol intake should be limited to 300 mg or less each day
Obtaining or maintaining a healthy body weight
Alcohol, especially beer, should be avoided
Adequate fluid intake (2-3 L/day)

Thank you so to Melinda who passed this award on to me
So, here is the deal. Now I am supposed to leave 7 creative tidbits about myself, but only 1 is true. This means 6 are lies…um…I mean false. I will let you try to figure out which is true and which are false and let me know what you think. Oh, and then I will graciously pass this award on to 6 other fantastic bloggers.
Here goes:
1. I’ve competed in an Olympic triathalon.
2. My friends think I should write a dating book because I give really good dating advice.
3. Mr. Prevention and I met on the Chicago subway.
4. I require 9 hours of sleep every night to function.
5. I prefer to run outside than on the treadmill.
6. I play defense on my ice-hockey teams.
7. My husband brings me donuts and coffee to bed on Sundays mornings.
Now, I get to pass this along. I love all of the great blogs that I read and I only get to pick 6, so I’ll spread the love to some of my newer blog reads…
1. Joanne of Eats Well with Others
2. Tracey of I’m Not Superhuman
3. Andrea of Can You Stay For Dinner?
4. Kerstin of Cake, Batter, and Bowl
5. Cara of Cara’s Cravings
6. Evan of Food Makes Fun Fuel
Question: Which of the above statements is my TRUTH???

I’m going to guess #2…I bet you give awesome dating advice!
March 6, 2010 at 6:23 am
#3?
You are going to want extra soil for your potatoes as they grow I believe as 8 inches isn’t much room for them. But maybe you knew that already.

Your garden looks AWESOME!
I think you need to expand on #3 sometime. Maybe you already have, but I missed it.
March 6, 2010 at 7:20 am
I think you play ice hockey.
March 6, 2010 at 7:31 am
Growing my own potatoes would be like a dream! That’s so cool!
I want to say number 4; sometimes; I would definitely argue I need that much sleep.
And thanks for the tag! Now what can I lie about…

Oohhhh, that reminds me!! On thanksgiving there was an appetizer out that someone brought: cream cheese stuffed dates with walnuts on top! So amazing!!
Your garden looks great!! It’ll look even better RED!!

I am going to guess #3, but that was tough, I think maybe #5 could be true too. Oh well, we’ll see. Great lies in there too since I just can’t figure it out.
The garden looks like it is coming along great. I bet you can’t wait until things start spouting up.

#7? I wish my bf would do that!

Wow girl–your on a roll with the garden! I wish I had ambition like that, but my grandpa has a 3 acre farm with every veggie imaginable, so I won’t do without lots of fresh produce and herbs–can’t wait! Good luck with yours!

Kale is one of my favorite things in the garden. It grows abundantly and is easy to maintain, even organically. Plus, it’s perfect for fresh summer green smoothies!

FUN! I think that number 3 is the truth!
Have a great Saturday, Nicole!

Hooray for getting your garden in!! Can’t wait til I see some green
And thanks for the gout info – my husband has flair ups at least a couple times a year!
March 6, 2010 at 5:41 pm
I love watching your garden progress – it makes me realize I need to get working on planting my raised bed. Oh gosh – once the little sprouts start popping up – then it’s like this daily watching game (for those of us who are like that)… It’s awesome growing food that you’re going to eat. It just tastes better – and not from a pure flavor standpoint, but from the “dude I made (well cultivated) this” standpoint. You get to go out to your garden and pick things from dinner and go YAY! I forget your plan at the moment – but if you don’t have basil in there, I would definitely recommend adding that in later in the spring – pesto pesto pesto!
March 6, 2010 at 8:33 pm
I know! I’m so excited!
Oh basil is a for sure! I spend a small fortune in basil in the winter months! I’m actually going to do my basil in a planter than I can get out of the Oklahoma sun some. I’m afraid it’ll just wilt under the constant 100+ degree days! : )

I think number 2 is right but sorta want it to be number 7 because that would be GREAT!
March 6, 2010 at 8:30 pm

March 7, 2010 at 12:10 am

Met on a subway!
I’m glad your garden is growing well.
March 7, 2010 at 12:37 pm
LOVE the raised garden! My SO and I are planning one, though it will be odd shaped, I’m super excited!
March 7, 2010 at 2:33 pm
I’m betting on No. 3! Thanks for passing the award on to me!
March 7, 2010 at 9:27 pm
I heard you can get gout from drinking too much soda. True?
March 7, 2010 at 10:12 pm
I’m reading your posts out of order today, so I already know the answers… But, a bit of advice re: painting your raised bed-don’t bother. If the wood you used to build the bed is untreated, it will age very nicely and look natural. However, if you paint, you’re setting yourself for a chore when it starts to peel and look unsightly. Just something to consider. Looking forward to watching your garden grow.
March 8, 2010 at 7:08 pm
I am late to the game, but thank you so much! Now I’ve gotta come up with some really creative stuff. I have not read ahead fortunately, so for your truth, I’ll go with… your friends think you should write a dating book! You give great nutrition advice, why not dating too?
March 11, 2010 at 10:04 pm
Awww, thanks
I pick number 3! I wish number 7 was true for me every once in awhile though
