On Friday, July 6th I got an email that made me squeal. Just the subject line, “Prevention RD Cookbook?,” was enough to send me into full-out hysteria — disbelief, excitement, and every other emotion under the sun.
I opened the email and it read, “…I was recently given the link to your blog, Prevention RD. I browsed through your recipes, checked out your photos, (bookmarked some recipes to try later!), and read your About Me and Food Philosophy pages. I feel that your approach to cooking/baking and your past, present, and future material would result in a great cookbook….Have you ever thought of publishing a cookbook? Do you think this project would hold any interest for you? Please let me know if you would like to discuss the details….”
I think I then proceeded to read it about 12 times, pinch myself, and then call my nearest and dearest to FREAK OUT with excitement.
I talked with the Editorial Assistant via email to get some questions answered. During this time, she was feeling out the Editorial Team to see if my culinary spin and approach was, in fact, “cookbook material”. She encouraged me to write a proposal and said that she was interested in pitching my book to the publisher. The proposal included some information on me, my background as a dietitian, what got me into cooking and why my perspective is unique, along with some work samples of recipes and photographs. My proposal was submitted on July 24th.
On July 30th, I received an email with a subject line of, “Prevention RD Cookbook — Great News!” I about died. The email read, “I just pitched your book and my publisher would love to publish a cookbook based on your blog…I’m so excited for you! Congratulations!”
And, that was that. All smiles and then panic-stricken with, “Oh my gosh…CAN I DO THIS?!”
The answer to that question is, I hope so! But in order to do so, I am going to be cutting back on my blogging frequency through October 1st when my manuscript needs to be complete. I have no intention of quitting blogging and I have every intention of picking up speed to my usual daily posting in 8 short weeks. 😀
Eight weeks…dear lord. So much to do! Between the new job that keeps me working a 50+ hours a week, keeping up with the blog (albeit on a smaller scale), continuing my routine of exercise and my hockey team (I’d go looney tunes without regular exercise), and the upcoming college football season and chili contest…it should be a challenge to add in writing a cookbook, but we’re going to give it a go! When it rains it pours (good and bad — luckily, this is all good!). Writing a cookbook is truly a dream come true…and I would never let this opportunity and honor pass me by.
As for the details, the cookbook will be out in the spring of 2013 (April/May). I will be doing a lot of new recipes for the cookbook that have never been posted on my blog. Each recipe will have nutrition information (of course!) and a color photo, plus a few notes from yours truly. Don’t you just hate when cookbooks have recipes without a photo? Me too. The cookbook will include at least 100 recipes and a variety of selections — everything from appetizers to vegetarian to crock pot. Desserts, as well!
There is no way this opportunity would have come about without readers of my blog coming to my corner of the web each day. So, thank you…so very much. I never would have believed that something like this could fall into my lap, literally, but I am so thankful that it did. I am so passionate about health and wellness, helping every day people see that they can eat well by making small, manageable changes that result in truly delicious food that they will want to eat forever. Eating well should never be a barrier — not cost, not accessibility, and certainly not taste!
