1/2 marathon & garden updates!

I’m a firm believer in calendars and workouts pre-scheduled for race training. There’s something very satisfying about crossing off the days as the race approaches, and never wondering what you have to accomplish each day.

So yes, first things first….I have a 1/2 marathon plan of attack! I’m being flexible and realistic in my training regimen as I have a trip to California  AND Chicago next week, a hockey tournament the weekend before the race, as well as working in my DO What You DON’T goals for April. A juggling act, if I do say so myself! So, it’s going to look something like this:

Prevention RD’s 5 week 1/2 marathon/life training schedule:

First “long” run: 7 miles (yesterday)

Week 1: hockey + stretch; 4 ½ miles; 3 mi. + yoga; 4 ½ miles; rest; 50 min. cross-train; 8 miles (20 miles total)

Week 2: hockey + stretch/strength; 5 miles; 3 mi. + yoga; 5 miles; 50 min. cross-train; rest; 8-9 miles (21-22 miles total)

Week 3: strength + stretch; 5 miles; 3 mi. + yoga; 4 ½ miles; rest; 50 min. cross-train; 9 miles (21 ½ miles)

Week 4: hockey + stretch; 3 mi. + strength; 5 miles; yoga; 9-10 miles; rest; hockey (17-18 miles + hockey tournament)

Week 5: hockey + stretch/strength; 4 miles; 3 miles; 2 mi. + yoga; rest; rest; ½ marathon (9 miles total)

Any feedback on this? Too much? Too little? I’m in over my head? 😉

I’m not gunna lie, yesterday was tough. Really tough. The second I started running my body was telling me to stop. Jillian Michael’s the day before a long run = not such a good idea. Duh. But, I pushed through. Come mile 4 I had to walk. Just a minute, but I had to. I went into the 7-miler with a goal of 77 minutes or less. I finished in 75:37. I was pleased to have it over with. Unfortunately, I felt like crud the rest of the night and my body is SCREAMING at me today. Just one hockey game to endure this afternoon and Monday is REST!

Thus, I am approaching this 1/2 very cautiously and conservatively. Maybe some Galloway walk/run will be in my future, but we’ll see how things play out from here!

GARDEN UPDATE!

The spring has come, the last frost has gone (fingers crossed). 😀

It’s a good thing, too…my plants that I started indoors 4 1/2 weeks ago were needing more room. Some of them actually died off from not having enough room to grow. The spring needed to come when it did, and so I wasted no time.

What’s in my garden?

potatoes, onions, jalapenos, bell peppers, squash, cucumbers, artichokes, Brussels sprouts, Romaine, kale, spinach, tomatoes (cherry, Roma, and yellow pear).

Lily helped…

…eat the tomatoes. That fence needs to be higher!!

squash and cucumbers grow best in “hills”…

potatoes, onions, kale, and spinach that have been in for 5 weeks 🙂

Everything is in..just needs the TLC + water and we’ll hope for the best!!!

Question: Have you been watching Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution? If yes, what do you think of the “revolution”?

Random Question: Are you a fan of MLB? If so, what team?

Cubbie Love!

…And don’t forget about those DO What You DON’T Challenge goals!! We’re 1/3rd of the way in! 😀 Keep up the good work! You are all a huge inspiration to me!!

P.S. Don’t forget to enter my VitaTops Giveaway! Ends tomorrow evening!

Hope it’s as beautiful there as it is here,

Personally, I like to take two rest days a week. I find that when I don’t, I get really burned out especially towards the end of a training plan when I feel like I’m running a lot. I think your long runs look good.

I love Jamie Oliver. That reminds me that I need to watch Friday’s episode.

Hey! I think your plan sounds great! But, I wouldn’t worry about following it perfectly. Just use it as your guide. If one day you are feeling too tired, don’t force yourself to workout anyway. I wouldn’t want you to get an injury from overuse!! I guess what I’m saying is listen to your body! ๐Ÿ™‚

Just the thought of a marathon makes me tired, ha! I will be anxious to follow you on your running journey though–I am sure you’ll do fantastic!

    The garden’s looking great!!

And I think your 1/2 marathon training looks good, though I’ve never trained for one myself ;-). Good luck!!

Sounds like a great plan! Walk breaks worked wonders for me, I think they are always a good idea ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve been watching Jamie’s Food Revolution, and I like it even though it is getting pretty gimmicky…

You are going to be one fit lady! Good luck, I think you can do it! Love the picture of your dog in front of the garden. I can’t wait to get home to mine!

I’m a calender guy too. That’s a lot of stuff in a small garden. Hope it comes up well for you.

Go you for the 1/2! I need to get on that…one day:) And yea, Jillian before a long run–ouch! Also–Lily is SOOO cute and so is your garden! Love it!

I think your training schedule sounds great – with only 5 weeks left, it will be a challenge, hope the weather cooperates, and you will be golden! This is your first half, right? I completed my first half in October 2009 and trained for nearly 3 months – I was also a brand new runner all-together. My goal was to run the entire time and finish – I accomplished that and was very proud of myself and knew that my diligent training regime paid off.

    GO TIGERS!!!

Watching the Food Revolution. I think it’s wonderful what he is doing and how Jamie is changing the way a “fat” city thinks about food, not only in the schools, but the entire city. My dad even watches and believes in Jamie’s Revolution – takes a lot to change his mind about steak and potatoes ๐Ÿ™‚

I wish we got Jamie Oliver’s show here on AFN, but I haven’t seen it yet. The garden looks great. I would be afraid my dog would want to use it as a bathroom ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. April 11, 2010 / 2:00 pm

I think that sounds like a great plan for your 1/2! I always feel better setting out my training schedule, too.

I saw Jamie Oliver on Oprah, but I keep forgetting to record the show! ๐Ÿ™ I love the concept…especially having taught in schools and seeing first hand how kids eat today.

  12. April 11, 2010 / 2:01 pm

wow, 7 miles is quite an accomplishment!! Don’t feel badly for walking..I typically take a 30 sec-1 min walk break every 15 minutes or so.. it really helps to keep me going, and I don’t feel badly about it one bit.

  13. April 11, 2010 / 2:10 pm

Well done on getting your run in, that’s alot to start with.

I love Jamie (I actually got to work with him when I was in grad school, before he was famous, I was an assistant stage manager for a benefit he was a part of) I love the Food Revolution but the radio guy thing felt totally fake to me ๐Ÿ™ Hubby kept saying this is so staged from the beginning of the episode, you know he will totally “convert” him. So yea it felt a bit to much like TV for me but I still love the show and love what they are doing. The only sad thing is there was a poll recently and the town is not living the revolution anymore with the cameras etc gone. ๐Ÿ™
Does Lily like carrots? My lab used to jump up into my raised beds and help herself to a carrot each day, grrrr ๐Ÿ˜› It was actually pretty cute since she only did one a day, but she always made a mess!

My husband said the SAME thing about the radio guy!

  14. April 11, 2010 / 2:28 pm

I love that you have a plan. I personally cant plan things – Im all about only doing what I feel like. Sound like an excuse? It probably is!

Ive watched a couple episodes of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution and I think what he’s trying to do is a great thing. I think its desperately needed. People need to realize what theyre eating, and if he can help them do that, I think thats a wonderful thing.

  15. April 11, 2010 / 4:32 pm

The Massachusettian in me is a huge Sox fan, even if I live in the Midwest now! Your garden looks lovely, you will have tons of awesome eats in no time!

  16. April 11, 2010 / 4:52 pm

Your calendar thing is the way I feel about lists. I love crossing things off. It really does make you feel like you’re accomplishing so much more! ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. April 11, 2010 / 5:08 pm

I love Jillian but she makes runs after her workout difficult! I love the garden. My mom is working on her’s but it it still cool here to put them in the ground. She has been growing them under a light in the guest bedroom… classy, I know.

  18. April 11, 2010 / 6:44 pm

I’m a huge planner too! ๐Ÿ™‚ Congrats on your time for the 7-miler, that’s awesome! I’m so excited for your garden, Nicole! I can tell Lily loves it too! ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. April 11, 2010 / 6:46 pm

A cubs fan Nicole! I don’t think we can be friends during baseball season. Cardinals all the way hahahaha just kidding!

I completely agree with having a workout schedule. I have always done that myself and being able to cross off the days are the best. You will do great!

  20. April 11, 2010 / 7:18 pm

I love Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution!!!! I loved when they broke out in a dance at the college…I wanted to join right in!

Lily is such a cutie!!!!! she makes my heart smile lol

Ha I am the same way with calenders…I love to have everything organized! some may call it “anal” lol

  21. April 11, 2010 / 7:19 pm

Ouch on the 7 miler + Jillian. I hope your legs start treating you better soon.

PS – I did my hour beginner’s yoga class on Friday. I have been keeping up with it well and am growing to love having it in my schedule.

  22. April 11, 2010 / 7:48 pm

wow impressive to work towards a 1/2 marathon cute garden

  23. April 11, 2010 / 8:18 pm

Great job on your training so far. I just love seeing pics of your bully. Bulldogs (besides my hubby) are the love of my life. hahaha

  24. April 11, 2010 / 11:37 pm

I enjoy your blog posts, thank you very much you have helped me out greatly ๐Ÿ™‚ spread the love.

  25. April 12, 2010 / 5:13 am

I love Lily “helped” you with your plants ๐Ÿ™‚ Your garden looks great so far! I can’t wait to see all the veggies that come out of those little greens.

Your training schedule seems very reasonable to me – lots of variety and gradually building up. I’m not a sports person, though, so I’m just going based on instinct. Excellent time on your 7 miler! You’re going to rock this 1/2 marathon! ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. April 12, 2010 / 7:29 am

i HAVE TO AGREE there is just something so great about crossing off days on a calendar.. and to do list!

i have never done a race so I cannot help you but looks like you are one active girl! WAY to exercise :o)

  27. April 12, 2010 / 8:13 am

So glad you decided to do the race! I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how easy it will be with that plan in place. Speaking of plans, my own garden plans have gotten pushed back a few weeks, but we are still ahead of the last frost, so hopefully we’ll catch up!

  28. April 12, 2010 / 8:34 am

Nope, I’ve never watched Food Revolution and I’m not sure if it’s showing over here. However, I watched his former shows and am a huge fan. ๐Ÿ™‚

  29. April 12, 2010 / 11:23 am

Ahh look at your garden! It looks amazing!!
I’m sort of in love with Jamie Oliver. While I’m torn by his tactics, I really think he’s doing a great thing.

  30. April 12, 2010 / 11:15 pm

I just love love love your garden! I want one so badly…darn apartment life. ๐Ÿ™

I think I may be the only blogger that finds Food Revolution to be lame-o.

  31. April 16, 2010 / 8:45 am

My hubby is big Cubbie fan too! We enjoy going to watch the Astros, but they are 1-8 right now…yikes!
