One little nudge of advice: let go of the regret about your birth plan not coming to fruition the way you would have liked. Don’t waste even one more minute fretting that you didn’t get the perfect plan enacted as you envisioned it. My daughter had a beautiful birthing plan, too, and when she was hospitalized with pre-eclampsia she was so distraught because nothing was going according to her plan — and she had “written it down!”

When they had to do an emergency C-section due to fetal distress, and then it was days before she could see her little boy (who was in NICU while she was recovering and unable to get down to where he was to see him) she really took it hard. As any mother would. But now, she is so in love with and caught up in her five-year-old whirlwind of a healthy, bright, funny, rambunctious child, it seems like all the remorse over not getting that skin-on-skin at the beginning is just so … irrelevant.

You have a beautiful family and a beautiful life. Just don’t waste a minute of it fretting that one little part of getting Shea here didn’t go according to plan. I assure you, there will be a million moments in this girl’s future that won’t go according to your plan — and just having her on this planet with you will make up for that.

I enjoy your recipes immensely, but am perfectly happy getting little glimpses of your life as a strong woman, loving wife, and new mother. Happy New Year to you and your lovely family.

My brother always remarks that if he asked Hannah to rotate the tires on his car she’d ask “where is the manual?” Since I knew I wasn’t always going to be with her, from the time she was potty trained if she had to go while we were out, I’d have her ask where the bathroom was.

You’ll be okay – Shea will be okay. Life is grand! 😀

I was nodding along the whole time, from understand the initial pain of breastfeeding to the feeling of your heart exploding with love. Now as a mom to two little girls, I can attest to the fact that with a second, your heart only grows. It was a concept I couldn’t previously grasp, but I get it now. There is no love quite like the love for your children. Best of luck on your first day back!
