Toad-in-the-Hole!

First, I wanted to thank you all for such sweet words and praise for my recent news. I really do appreciate your warmth! This is a very exciting time for me as an RD and aspiring author 😀

As Mr. Prevention and I layed in bed wondering why we ever got a puppy as she cried at 6:00 AM waking up, I knew my tummy grumbles were wanting something I haven’t had in a while…something fun! No more than 2 seconds went by before I thought of a childhood favorite: Toad-in-the-Holes!

Please tell me someone else has heard of toad-in-the-holes! Or, do you know them by a different name? I know there’s some cute names out there!

Anyways, egg…in a hole punched into a slice of bread. A little butter Smart Balance Light and a fry pan…voila! Mmm mmmm! It does take some perfection to get toasty bread AND runny yolks…but I’m workin’ on it!

We are off to watch the Illini vs. Purdue basketball game with friends this afternoon. They’re likely coming back for dessert and I need to figure something out!

I’m running a temperature of 99.3 F (okay, not deathly…but enough to do the hot/cold sweat thing), and I started to feel under the weather as soon as I finished a long run last night (6.5 miles!). I took some Maxalt for my migraine yesterday and had really bad chest pain as a result. I thought it was heartburn (which I never get), until a doctor at work cued me in to the serious side effects of the drug. And I’m guessing the fever and chest pain are both due to the drug side effects? Ugh, SCARY! Needless to say I will 1) not be taking Maxalt until I get checked out…if even then, and 2) be in to the doc next Friday while all the while hoping this migraine can kick itself!! ::fingers crossed::

Question: Do you like runny yolks in your eggs, or is that a no way Jose? Have you had Toad-in-a-holes before? 😉

Random question: Do you watch NCAA basketball? If so, who do you root for? Will you be filling out a tournament bracket this year?

Love runny eggs….yum…they are the best! I have heard of toad-in-the-hole. LOVE IT! I like to yolks to run all over the plate and then I sop it up with the toast! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. February 20, 2010 / 10:31 am

And have I been hiding under a rock? I have never heard of toad-in-the-holes until now!

  3. February 20, 2010 / 10:36 am

I’ve heard of that–but not called toad in the hole. I think I’ve heard it called something innovative like eggs in toast holes. Not as fun. I don’t eat them though because I like my eggs dry. I hate runny eggs and I hate dipping toast in eggs. My husband, on the other hand, loves them!

  4. February 20, 2010 / 10:36 am

Such a delish breakfast!! I have never done that and I’ve got to! I like my yolks runny so that I can dip the bread. Have a great day!!

I love the avocado on your header. Yum!

Charlotte University would be my NCAA Basketball team. Go A-10!

Yum!! That would be one good breakfast!! Thanks for sharing! Have a great weekend!

I’ve never had that before, but I’ve seen it on a few blogs. Cute name!

I hope you feel better. Chills are the worst!

    Congrats on the run!

Congrats on your thesis abstract, that is really fantastic!!! Thanks so much for your sweet comment, that really meant a lot to me! ๐Ÿ™‚ Your toad in the hole looks delish! (My mom calls them eggs in a basket. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) I’m kind of picky about my eggs…I like my eggs runny but I hate if any of the white isn’t cooked (it always grosses me out, lol!), so it’s a fine line for me. If I don’t feel like taking the time to be so picky I just scramble them. ๐Ÿ™‚

    P.S. I hope you’re feeling better soon!

  9. February 20, 2010 / 1:50 pm

I’ve definitely heard of toad-in-a-hole, but I don’t think I’ve ever actually enjoyed one before. Better late than never, right?!

When it comes to fried eggs, I prefer my yolks broken and my eggs cooked on both sides… but I love a good runny poached egg. I’m working on mastering my poaching technique ;).

I am so sorry to hear about your migraine. I have ended up in the ER before when they have gotten out of control. I hope you can find a medication that works and does not have those crazy side effects.
Also, congrats on your thesis abstract that is AWESOME!

  11. February 20, 2010 / 3:49 pm

I can’t say I’ve ever even eaten one of those

  12. February 20, 2010 / 3:54 pm

My father in law calls them “eggs in a nest.” I’m a non-yolk person – ie I prefer not to eat the yolk – runny or not. I have discovered that I can deal with a softer yolk better as it has a less strong taste.

Sorry about your migraine. One thing I’ve learned is you might need to try out a number of different triptains before you find one that works well for you. I tried some that had no effect before I found one that has some ability to work some of the time. It’s a sucky guessing game.

  13. February 20, 2010 / 3:54 pm

Depends on the day whether I like them runny. Haven’t had toads in a hole but have had toads on a pad before….poached eggs on toast….best way for them to be runny.

  14. February 20, 2010 / 4:01 pm

These toad in the holes aka eggs in the baskets are popping up everywhere lately! I need to try it out for myself! They look like fun to make! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  15. February 20, 2010 / 4:38 pm

we always called those eggs in a blanket! i am nottttt a fan of egg yolks (never have been even as a kid) so those are no go for me, unless it’s just the whites lol. but they look so cool, i’m tempted to make em anyway! yikes i hope you feel better, that sounds miserable

  16. February 20, 2010 / 4:43 pm

A favorite childhood memory of mine as well! We called it “Birds in a Nest”….it’s funny how it’s kind of a similar concept, but different name. I definitely like a runny yolk…perfect for soaking it up with a piece of whole wheat toast.

  17. February 20, 2010 / 4:46 pm

I LOVE toad in the hole, total childhood memory. I also used to love soft boiled egg with toast soldiers to dip in the yolk. As a grown up I also love to make toad in a hole and bake them in the oven with a touch of parmesan over the top, serious yummy. I also love a runny yolk but about 10 years ago I got Salmonella and now the slightest bit in an egg that wouldn’t get most people sick has me sick as a dog, so I only do runny yolks with organic eggs and I seem to do okay sticking by that rule.

I hope you feel better and yea that sounds scary about the meds!

  18. February 20, 2010 / 4:51 pm

I heard of toad in a hole only through food blogs, never heard of it before!

Congrats on your accomplishments!! You should be so proud of yourself!

BTW, I was in Oak Park today and I waved hello in the general direction of your parents house! ๐Ÿ˜€

I’ve heard of toads-in-a-hole but never had one before. They look cute!
I love runny eggs — poached are my favourite.

  21. February 20, 2010 / 5:20 pm

I don’t like running yokes at all, but I do love that breakfast!! I remember having it as a kid but don’t remember what it was called. I’ll have to ask my mom because now I’m curious.

Hope you feel better real soon, and good job on the long run girl!

  22. February 20, 2010 / 5:26 pm

I don’t like runny eggs! And I’ve never heard of or tried toad-in-the-holes. I think I’ll have to some time though :-).

  23. February 20, 2010 / 5:31 pm

those sound awesome girl! i LOVE me some eggs-in any kind!! sooo good.
i really really appreciate your feedback about protein- i know you wouldnt say that if you didnt care! you are so sweet and i really took that to heart.. i know you know what you are talking about! have a great day girl!

  24. February 20, 2010 / 5:51 pm

I’ve heard toads in a hole, eggs in a basket, and birds in a nest. It’s tasty whatever you choose to call it!

  25. February 20, 2010 / 6:03 pm

Oh my God – congrats girl !!! I just read about it ๐Ÿ™‚ Any writing is a blessing in my book.

Toads in holes??!! I’ve never heard of it!…But I LOVE it (hey, you had me at toad…;) ). I never used to like runny eggs AT ALL – but I could see me eating them now actually – LOVE THE YOLK YUMMMM.

  26. February 20, 2010 / 6:37 pm

Love it! Or at least I used to, when I still ate eggs ๐Ÿ™‚ I think I knew them as “frog in a log” or something like that.

  27. February 20, 2010 / 6:58 pm

Yum!! We call them bull’s eyes and yes I like runny yolk. It’s funny though as a kid I could only have my eggs of well done ๐Ÿ™‚ gosh, sure hope you feel better, meds can be icky.

  28. February 20, 2010 / 7:02 pm

I love toad in the hole, and realllllllllllllly runny eggs. They are the best! Hope you had a great weekend!

  29. February 20, 2010 / 7:32 pm

I’ve actually heard them called eggs in a basket! So good! And so long as there’s lots of bread for dipping, runny eggs are great in my book!

  30. February 20, 2010 / 8:02 pm

My husband’s dad calls them Army Eggs. I have no idea why b/c I don’t think he ate them in the Army, ever. Or was even in the Army.

  31. February 20, 2010 / 9:26 pm

ick! runny yolks are a no way jose for me! i love eggs, but the yolk has to be rock solid!

  32. February 20, 2010 / 11:26 pm

Ok – Ive never heard of these before but what an awesome idea!!
I LOVE runny yolks. My favorite thing when I was little was soft boiled eggs with toast. I loved dipping my little toast sticks into the eggs.

  33. February 21, 2010 / 7:24 am

What a fun way to treat yourself! I am all about the runny yolks although I’ve never had toads in the hole. I may have to though, just based on the name alone.

Drug side effects are definitely scary. I try to avoid taking meds at all costs but I think migraines are definitely a good excuse…they can be so debilitating. Maybe you could just switch to another brand of migraine medication?

  34. February 21, 2010 / 7:44 am

No runny eggs or basketball for me. =) My husband loves toads in a basket, although i think he calls them pop eye eggs.

    Hope you’re feeling better today!

  35. February 21, 2010 / 7:50 am

I love college sports. Go Purdue! Tough game yesterday, it was getting way to close for comfort. I am considering wearing black and gold everyday in March so we make it the Final Four. Yes, I am that into my sports.

  36. February 21, 2010 / 7:51 am

They eat half-boiled eggs here in Singapore…aka VERY runny. I probably wouldn’t have gone near it before coming here, but I have a “try anything once” mentality here. Once you get over the idea of what you’re eating, it’s pretty good! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hope you’re feeling better!!

  37. February 21, 2010 / 7:54 am

I have never made “toad in a hole” before, but I LOVE runny yolks! I think for me, rather than taking time to try to get the egg in the bread, I would rather just make a sunny side up egg, and toast the bread separately. I know, I know, that’s lame, but I’m not a patient person!

So I checked out your post from yesterday and CONGRATS! That’s exactly what I did. Is submitted my abstract for FNCE and I was chosen, along with everyone else in my group, haha. Really I don’t think it’s hard, so I would be willing to be there is about a 90% chance you will be going to FNCE next year!!! You will LOVE it! Seriously, best time of my life, and such fantastic information.

  38. February 21, 2010 / 10:42 am

Congrats on your thesis news…that is so exciting!!!

Hmm…I’m never had a “Toad in the Hole,” but now I’m saying it in my head to the tune of “Pants of the Ground.” LOL

I went to Indiana University, but we have had a miserable few years in basketball. ๐Ÿ™ I’m rooting for Butler, though – such a small school but they are doing really well!

  39. February 21, 2010 / 5:53 pm

    Hope you feel better.

I do not like runny eggs. I mostly eat them scrambled or hard-boiled. I went to Mexico last year and got what I thought was a hard-boiled egg but it was soft-boiled. Ew.

  41. February 22, 2010 / 7:31 am

So sorry to hear about your migraine…those suck in every way. The “Toad in the Hole,” coolest idea. Actually saw a photo of one the other day where the egg inside was heart shaped. So awesome!

  42. February 22, 2010 / 8:19 am

We always called it eggs in a frame, but I love this dish!

I know “toad in the hole” but it’s something completely different: sausages baked in yorkshire pudding batter.
