Garden Update!
I got home from work to find dirt delivered to our driveway. I worked from 6:15-8:15pm on moving the dirt from the driveway to the garden bed in the backyard. But, it is done! I’m pretty sure my neighbors were wondering why I was throwing around dirt in the dark, but I’m the type of person who likes to finish what I start! 😀
Things I’ve learned about gardening:
Gardening is exercise. There should be a warning for gardening like there is for exercise: “Please consult your physician before beginning a garden.”
A sturdy wheel barrel is important. My wheel barrel wheel fell off and I had to use a wrench to get it back on!
Hills + wheel barrel filled with dirt = HARD!
Gloves protect from blisters. Wear them!
Lift with your legs. It’s easy to strain the lower back when using a shovel — use your legs to lift heavy loads.
Layer of newspaper under the dirt (approx. 6 sheets thick)
All filled in! Approximately 7 inches deep.
SWEATY scrub top after hauling all that dirt!!
Feels good to be done with that! I was going to have a beer to celebrate, but all I wanted was water!!

Today’s NNM Topic: Diverticulitis
Diverticulitis results from small out-pouchings in the intestine which become infected or inflamed. In most individuals these pouches are harmless and only post danger if they become infected or perforate the bowel. The cause of diverticulitis is unknown, but a low-fiber diet is linked to increased risk for diverticulitis; fiber aids as a bulking agent which enables fecal matter to travel more easily though the bowel. When a diet is low in fiber, fecal matter can become more easily lodged in small places and can cause infection over time.
Symptoms of diverticulitis include stomach pain, fever, chills, diarrhea or constipation, gas, nausea, vomiting, and poor appetite. If an individual is diagnosed with diverticulitis foods with small particles should be avoided. These foods include seeds, nuts, popcorn kernels, etc. These items are easily lodged in diverticula and can cause a flare-up. A high-fiber diet and proper hydration should be implemented in diverticulitis suffers.
Question: How many calories do you think I burned during my 2-hour soil hauling tonight? I wore my Garmin heart rate monitor. Whoever comes closest, I will send a Chobani coupon to!
I had so much to post about today, I am holding off til tomorrow for the Q&A! 🙂
P.S. Andrea is giving away Amazing Grass products! Check it out!
I’ll guess 1100 calories burned. Bet that was one of your toughest workouts ever!
Nice job in the garden! I’d say you burned 600 calories?? Isn’t it great to get a workout doing something other than going to the gym!
Sounds like a great plan: a glass of wine with your Earth to Table book….the author is waiting on your US copy to arrive from publisher then he will mail. Hang in there, it is so worth it ๐
The crisp looks great, love the cherries.
Awesome job with the garden!!! And that crisp looks delicious! I think I have all the ingredients on hand, so I might make it very soon. ๐
What a great workout! I can’t even venture a guess on calories burned for you since it has a lot to do with body size and conditioning. I am small and short, and it takes a while to get my heart rate up, so I’m guessing I probably would have burned about only 500 or so in the 2 hours. I imagine anyone taller/bigger would burn considerably more though. It is quite a workout with all that hauling and lifting and bending!
Hmmmm…that’s a tough one! I’m going to guess…740?
hmmm im going to guess 650?!
your eyes are soooo pretty!! beautiful color on you girl!
I’m going to guess 684. ๐ I like random guesses but I think it fits. ๐
And my friend had surgery about 6 months ago for diverticulitis. He was the healthiest guy too so its amazing the variety of people it can affect.
Yay! You are making such progress on the garden. I didn’t realize what a workout gardening can be! You must have at least burned about 575 calories.
you are hardcore!!! The men in my family always do the hauling of dirt ๐
I’d bet you burned 934 cals!
Oh wow, I’d love to have a garden. Maybe next summer
Wow good work! I think you burned 468 ๐
I see what you mean about my name not being clickable, that is so weird….
Great Job Nicole! I love to see what you are doing for the garden.
I may have to use your tips for my garden. Thanks ๐
I love fruit crisps, so that sounds great. Gardening is such good exercise! It’s one of my main forms in the summer. Plus, it’s fun and produces tangible, edible food!
Hmmm although it’s a sweaty workout, I don’t think it would keep your heart rate up as consistently as running, so therefore I don’t think the calories burned will be QUITE as high as some are guessing. My guess is 437! ๐
yay you have your own garden!! thas so awesome!!
I am going to guess 456 for the 2 hour work ๐
I just taught about diverticulosis and the -itis too in my class. Looks like the gardening is coming along. I bet it is hard work. Keep it up because it will be totally worth it.
Whoohooo on the garden! Can’t wait to see it progress!
We are using heat mats for starters for the first time, and I swear things are sprouting after TWO days! I would have never believed it. My husband is using cut-in-half rice milk boxes for starters too – glad they’re getting some use since they are not recyclable.
One of my friends who is really fit said her favorite workout is gardening….and I believe her! I just mulched for the first time last spring, and it took about an hour and a half. I was drenched!!
Hmmm….I’m going to guess 532? (Love even numbers). ๐
Oh how I wish I had a backyard to really garden in. I’d love to grow my own veggies. But I’ll just have to stick to herbs and small tomatoes on my balcony. My guess is you burned 800 calories doing all that digging and lifting. That’s a good workout!!
The crisp looks great!
I’m going to guess 800 calories. Nice work getting it all done!
Wow, how bad ass are you to do that in the dark! Actually, when we get our wood for our wood burning stove they do they same thing, just dump it in the drive.
But its my dear daughter Hannah that loves to stack it – she loves it!
Question: what the hell is Sucanat? Is that an artificial sweetener?
My guess: 622 calories burned in 2 hours throwing dirt ๐
Your garden’s looking great!!!
I am SO jealous of your garden!! It looks awesome. When Nick and I move, that’s the first thing I am going to do. I won’t have a place to workout (yet) so gardening will have to be my exercise. I can’t wait to see how your veggies and herbs turn out!
The recipe for the pear-cherry crisp sounds, and looks amazing. That would make a perfect dessert fora party of get-together. Thanks for sharing! Maybe next year you can make the recipe using fruits from your garden!
“consult your physician before beginning a garden” – LOVE that. It just goes to show you that exercise doesn’t necessarily entail going to the gym…it could just mean every day chores. I’m gonna go with 503 calories for the 2 hour gardening spree.
That crisp looks amazing! I need to start baking with fruit more.
Gardening is def an exercise and its so much fun too….
I’m guessing 550. I love how much exercise gardening is because it doesn’t feel like “exercise” it is much easier for me to do since it is a means to an end, an awesome garden. I always wear my heartrate monitor and I am usually surprised how much I burn.
I wonder if hauling dirt is like shovelling snow where out of shape people have heart attacks? anyone know?
OUCH your blister looks painful….and wow, hauling dirt seems like a sweaty job. heheheh ๐
I totally wanna try your granola recipe! I haven’t found a granola recipe that doesn’t require oil yet…this one is a first! Thank you for sharing Nicole!!
That pear cherry crisp looks amazing! Thanks for the comment on my blog btw! Zumba is the best! LOL! ๐
And go you for doing all the gardening! That’s some workout.
Yum! The pear-cherry crisp sounds so scrumptious! I love this combination!
Wow that is a lot of work. Nice Job!!!! I would guess 624 cal burned!
I would say 700 calories! Am I right?? Your garden is amazing. How cool to think that you have created something all on your own!
I’m so glad you enjoyed the crisp! I’ll have to try it with frozen cherries… or maybe fresh cherries come summertime :).
Oh woahhhhh, that crisp looks amazing!! ๐
My guess is 800 calories burned!! ๐
I am dying for a garden, but first I need to move out of NYC and into the suburbs….soon! Great job!
Great information on diverticulitis…my stepdad has it and this information was great!!
Hum…2 hours of gardening? I am going to guess 650?
I am loving the garden!!!!!! My son alaways says he wants us to have a garden !! I should show him the pics of how hard you worked, he would probably change his mind, lol!! U know how kids are, like they want the cute puppy but dont want to walk it or clean up after it! lol!!
U got a great workout with that gardening girl!!!
The crisp sounds awesome!
Great job on your gardening project! And yes, gardening is hard work and always leaves me with blisters… ๐
That crisp looks divine, Nicole! I’m imagining it with a dollop of plain yogurt on top and wishing I had some for breakfast! ๐ Your garden is coming along so well! I helped my mom haul dirt for her garden a couple of years ago — it is VERY hard work!! I’m going to guess 855 calories.
Wow that looks intense!! My guess in calories burned is about 900?
Wow – thats a lot of work. Hauling wheelbarrows is harder than people realize! Your garden is going to be awesome! I cant wait until I can have my own.
That garden looks great – what a great workout you got from moving all that dirt!
Can’t wait to see what you grow…
Your crisp looks fabulous and I’m so jealous you’re building a garden! We have some plants on our balcony, but I can’t wait until we have a yard!
