…that’s me.
Aren’t summer colds the worst? Don’t get me wrong, colds in the fall, winter, and spring stink, too…but summer colds are by far the worst. Needless to say, I saw a quick 6 patients yesterday morning before heading home for the afternoon. Again. I am hoping I make it through today and start to get some relief. Poor Mr. Prevention dealing with my NyQuil zombie-induced state Monday night. Apparently I snored like a banshee through the night. What a trooper…for a night. I graciously offered to sleep in the guest bed room last night to allow everyone sound sleep. Now who’s the trooper?
Lunch was sheer comfort food:
And after catching up on bad TV (Kasey, you are a MORON for tattooing that on your wrist for The Bachelorette), I decided to make more comfort food. But really, I was just bored…not hungry 😉
Chocolate Oat Jumbles slightly adapted from Weekly Bite
1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1 cup quick cooking oats
2 tablespoons flax meal (i.e. ground flax)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
2/3 cup chocolate syrup made with Splenda
2 tablespoons canola oil
1/4 cup soy milk fat-free milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Directions:
Preheat oven to 275º F.
Combine flour, oats, flax meal, baking soda, sugar, and cocoa powder. Whisk together until combined. Add chocolate syrup, soy milk, vanilla, oil, and chocolate chips. Stir until all ingredients are mixed well.
Spray cookie sheet with non-stick spray, or use a silpat. Drop cookie dough onto pan using either a melon ball scooper or a teaspoon. Slightly flatten each cookie with you fingers.
Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool in pan for a couple minutes. Remove cookies from pan onto cooling rack. Once cooled, store in airtight container. Yield: 2 1/2 dozen (30 cookies)
Nutrition Information (per cookie): 57 calories; 2.1 g. fat; 0 mg. cholesterol; 3.4 mg. sodium; 8.7 g. carbohydrate; 0.9 g. fiber; 0.6 g. protein
Result: Very good! Not the best cookies ever, but I’m a fan…especially for the calories and carbs. I substituted in the sugar-free chocolate syrup made with Splenda because 1) it’s all I had…never use the stuff, and 2) it’s lower carb for my carb-controlled diet. If you use regular chocolate syrup the cookies are 72 calories and 12.6 g. carbohydrate.
Question: What’s your soup of choice when you’re sick? Any other comforting foods or drinks you gravitate towards when you’re under the weather?
Sniffle sniffle,
When I’m sick the comfort food I go for is usually soup — it’s nourishing and doesn’t take too much effort to eat. π
I hope you’re feeling better soon, Nicole!
Hi there! I followed you over here from Kalli’s blog. It’s nice to meet you! Ok, enough with the introductions…
I hope you feel better! I’ve been on a super easy miso soup kick lately: 1 cup water + 2 t miso + 1/4 sheet of nori seaweed torn into small pieces. It’s crazy nutritious, light, soothing, and low carb! π
Summer colds ARE the worst! Hope you feel better soon!!
Aw, sounds miserable. I always turn to chicken soup (or vegetable soup if I don’t have a stomach bug), saltines, and lots and lots of tea and water. Feel better!
Oh boooo! Summer colds are awful- they just seem so unnatural, right?
I’m a big fan of creamier soups when I’m under the weather (not the best choice, but def a good comfort food). And tea. Lots and lots of tea…
Feel better soon!
Aww, rest and take care of yourself lady. I hope you feel better asap!
When I am sick, chicken noodle or tomato soup is where it is at.
Aww, feel better! π Lentil soup is the best for comfort, I find. Something about the hearty lentils makes me feel better! Plus inhaling the steam off of any soup is lovely haha.
Chocolate, of course, is the other comfort food. π
I hate summer colds, they are terrible. I always chug orange juice like crazy when I am sick. There is something about oj that fixes me — or at least I like to think that π
When I get sick, I make a batch of “cure you” soup. Start with good chicken stock, add in carrots, onions, astragalus root, lots of garlic, thyme, fresh ginger and zuchinni and let it simmer for about an hour. Drink freely. If that does not work, I subject myself or the sick person to something I call “the garlic cure” and they are better by morning. What is the garlic cure ? Take 4 cloves of fresh garlic ( no green shoots or brownish looking cloves) and place in a food processor with 1/4 cup of water. Puree it and drink it down fast.
Hope you feel better soon. Fresh orange juice is always great for summer cold.
I got a minor cold during vacation and it stank. It wasn’t TOO bad but still annoying. Hope you’re feeling better soon!
Aww I hope you feel better! My soup choice when I’m sick is either chicken noodle or tomato.
Awhh, being sick is never fun–get well soon!!
Chicken Noodle or Tomato always works for me. But seriously when I am sick I am sucker for Nyquil! That stuff knocks me out and allows my body to get the rest it is craving!
I’m sorry you have a summer cold. π When I’m sick I usually want my mama’s vegetable beef soup with ritz crackers crushed up on top.
I love ginger ale when I get a cold! Feel better my dear…summer colds suck. I blame AC…*sigh*
I love baking when I’m bored. I baked 2 types of biscotti on Monday night π
Oh, no! I am so sorry you are sick. π Getting sick in the summer time almost seemsβ¦..wrong β doesnβt it? I hope you feel better soon!
When Iβm sick I crave oatmeal or any carbohydrate (mainly bread and pasta!). Iβm pretty lucky, I guess, in that Iβm not sick too often β of course having said that, I probably jinxed it!
Has to be leek and potato! Although yesterday we had white chicken chili that I added double chicken broth to so that it was white chicken chili soup! Mmmmmmm mmmmmmm De-lish!
Those look super chocolatey! YUM!
When i’m under the weather I always want chocolate cream of wheat. It reminds me of my childhood and is so comforting. Hope you feel better soon! I lost my voice over the weekend and am finally sounding back to normal today, just still coughy π
yes summer colds are the WORST! so sorry nicole….take it easy. i love good old chicken noodle π
When I’m sick I tend to get the chills, so I will take anything warm – non-cream based soup or tea preferably. I hope you feel better soon!!!
ahh feel better sugar!!! LOVE the cookie recipe tho!
Tomato soup is my ultimate comfort food!
Summer colds do suck!
Those cookies look awesome.
Tomato soup and crackers is always what I ate when I was sick growing up! It’s still what I think of when I get a belly ache. Although that chocolate oat jumbles doesn’t sound bad either π
Thank you for the cookie recipe! I was looking for a cocoa-cookie recipe to make for my dad for fathers day…except I’ll be adding mint chocolate chips to the mix π
I’m a TOTAL soup person when I’m sick (/everyday). Also – biiig, warm mugs of tea and little “munchy”-type foods, usually nuts.
Hope youre feeling better soon!

I hate colds. Eyes water, sore nose, can’t quit coughing, sneezing, horrible Hope you get over it in a hurry.
When I’m sick, it doesn’t matter what kind of sick, I like hot tea and piece of dry toast. Basically, food just doesn’t make me feel better.
Feel better!!
Something a pharmacist recommended to me quite a few years ago that works everytime for me: Clairitin! Take a double dose the first 2-3 days and then normal dose the next few. Depending on how soon you get fighting the cold it will take 2-7 days and it’s gone.
Seemed odd to take an allergy medicine for a cold but he said it boosts the immune system. Like I said it’s worked for me everytime so far.
oh those cookies look great!
