First things first. The answer to yesterday’s trivia question is….HONEY! Honey is the ONLY food that doesn’t spoil. And many of you answered the question correctly – kudos!
I almost forgot where I stashed my crock pot after our recent move. But, alas, I found it…right below Jose Cuervo 😉 I’ve enjoyed my crock pot in the past, but I want to make serious strides towards simple, delicious one-pot meals this fall and winter. You hear that, crock? Mmmkay??
Starting with…crock pot applesauce!
Crock Pot Applesauce from A Year of Slow Cooking
4 large apples, skinned ,cored, and cut in quarters
juice of 1 lemon
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
1 Tbsp brown sugar
1/4 cup water
Skin, core, and cut your apples into quarters. Plop the pieces into your crockpot. Add the juice from the lemon, and the water. Pour in the vanilla, and add the cinnamon and brown sugar.
Cover and cook on low for 4-6 hours. When the apples are super tender, mash with a potato masher or large fork. Serves 4.

Result: …probably never buying applesauce again! This was hands down the best applesauce I’ve ever had…probably because it was the only homemade applesauce I’ve ever had. And it couldn’t be any easier to make! 😀
I totally bowed out of working out last night…no regrets! I took Miss Lily to the dog park and chatted it up with lots of doggy mommies. I came home to leftover chili and my DVR, and I’m not going to lie, it was great being lazy, catching up with TV & blogs. Having Mr. Prevention away on business has its perks…including hogging the bed and sleeping in a few minutes later than usual 😉 But, I miss him…don’t let me fool you!!
Since yesterday’s trivia was so much fun (smart cookies!)…
Today’s Food Trivia Question: Are black-eyed peas BEANS or PEAS?
Happy Hump Day! It’s my long one…catch y’all tomorrow!
I need to make my crockpot more accessible. I think I’d use it more. The cravings for chili should not be ignored! It’s just so huge and a hassle to get out!
Ahhh, I am ALWAYS looking for crockpot recipes that don’t involve meat!! Thanks for sharing!
Wow I can’t believe how easy it was for you to make homemade applesauce. It looks great. I remember my mom making homemade applesauce when we were kids. I will have to give this a try 🙂
Oooh, delicious! I’ve only made homemade applesauce once, but it was just microwaving apples and then puréeing them. Not too impressive. 😛 The best applesauce I’ve ever had actually came from Whole Foods. I’ve only had it once but ohmygod it was so SMOOTH, and that was the determining factor for me! o.O
Black-eyed peas are totally beans. I actually have no idea how I know this but they’re beans. XD
Have a great day! 🙂
yum! I made applesauce last year on the stovetop and it turned out really well, too!
I love homemade applesauce, though I haven’t made it since I was a a kid. This post also makes me want apple cider.
Now I HAVE to make applesauce this year after seeing yours!
Black Eyed Peas are Beans 🙂
I love homemade applesauce, I will definitely be making alot of it this fall!
I was secretly hoping that there was going to be a recipe for homemade applesauce at some point! I’ve always wanted to make it, as the hubby goes through it like water. Thanks for the recipe!
My crockpot broke a couple of moves ago (sad day) but I might have to pick up another one just to make applesauce! That sounds delicious!
I love homemade applesauce! Store bought just doesn’t compare at all – there is no flavor! And Black Eyes Peas are beans 🙂
I am going to say beans and add that I don’t care for beans or peas! It’s ‘good luck’ to make black eyed peas on New Years Day!
Well the name would suggest peas but I think beans… Maybe its some kind of trick question.
Homemade applesauce is the best! I used my food processor to chop it into pieces which saved a lot of prep time when I made some last week.
That applesauce looks great, it is one of the few things I have never made!
This applesauce looks great! I love using the crock pot. I am definitely going to pull it out when it starts cooling down.
Black eyed peas are beans I am pretty sure.
Apple sauce is another thing which i didnt know, it does looks really good, thanks for sharing it nicole…
Homemade applesauce is the best!
And I may have missed this if you’ve already discussed it, but I’d love your take on the new “corn sugar” commercials – is high fructose corn syrup worse than sugar? I’ve been avoiding it, but I don’t really know that much about it!
I’m in full on crock pot mode right now! I can’t wait to make homemade applesauce.
I love my crock pot, and that applesauce looks fantastic!! 🙂
I think black eyed peas are beans. They look like beans at least.
Okay, you totally got me motivated to get out my crock pot next week! I LOVE crock pot recipes. It’s great to come home and have your house smell like a restaurant. I never knew applesauce was so easy, too! I will have to pass this along to my sisters, since their kiddos LOVE applesauce.
Hmmm…I’m going to guess they are beans and that it is a trick question!
Thank you for this recipe! I’ve always been wondering how to make homemade applesauce. Even better that it’s in a crockpot.
my sister made me homemade applesauce for something like my 12th birthday – and seriously I can NOT eat it from a jar anymore…
And please tell me they are beans I will be so excited! I am allergic to peas (try being vegan and not have pea protein – it’s hard) and would be glad to have a new food to try someday!
I haven’t made applesauce in years! Love that you made it in your crockpot!
I love making crockpot applesauce!! I make it every year with my first graders when we talk about Johnny Appleseed! In fact I just made a note to get stuff ready for it next Friday b/c his birthday is next Saturday!! 🙂
I need to get my crockpot out too! I’m so happy it’s the season for crockpots again. 😉 The applesauce looks wonderful!
Ooh! Crockpot applesauce – sounds delish and super easy. What kind of apples do you use?
BTW- I think black-eyed peas are actually a bean…Am I right?! 🙂
Ah just another reason why I need a crockpot! lol
I’ve broken out the crockpot for fall too. I haven’t tried apples before. YUM. Homemade applesauce, we have a date on Saturday!
They’re beans! Trick question, right? Hee hee.
I used my crockpot all the time..I could never forget about it! And I LOVE that crockpot site..she has such pretty fabulous recipes!
I’m looking forward to apple season and getting out my crock more! Looks great and I was checking out that apple crisp as well mmm
That same recipe can be use to make apple butter in the crock pot successfully as well!! Just double the sugar ( I use sugar substitute for the second half) and let it simmer over night or even as long as 48 hrs on low.. stirring every so often. I canned up 4 dozen jars of it last year and gave it as Christmas gifts! I love my crock pot~
Thanks for reminding me to use it more~ I adore reading your posts and getting ideas.
Nicole, love this simple & sweet recipe for applesauce. Thanks for sharing 🙂 xo
