Barhi Dates + Weekly Menu

If you “like” Prevention RD on Facebook you probably saw a link I posted last weekend to an website selling Barhi dates. If you ignored it, shame on you! If you don’t “like” me on Facebook, shame on you, too! Just kidding 🙂

I was first introduced to Barhi dates in the small town of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. When we lived in Tulsa, I worked at a clinic in Bartlesville and one day on my lunch break, I ventured out on a walk. I came across a little health foods store and walked out with these dates I’d never heard of…barhi dates. The health foods store owner assured me that they were nature’s sweetest candy.

Well, she wasn’t lying. I was hooked. I made the mistake of telling several friends about these barhi dates and over time, the demand diminished the supply and I was left barhi date-less on several occasions. 🙁 The owner caught on started to order more. Crisis averted.

That is until we moved to Columbus — I am unable to find any barhi dates sold locally. After seeing Lauren’s post about barhi dates, I immediately consulted my best friend, Google, and landed myself on Nuts Online’s website.

My favorite way to eat these rich, sweet, caramel-like dates is pitted and stuffed with a walnut. Heavenly.

The woman sitting next to me on the plane asked what I was eating. She was very intrigued by my walnut-stuffed dates (which travel great, by the way). Once I explained what I was eating she said she was going to have to try it out. Converting people to date lovers, one-by-one!

Do something nice for yourself and spend the $5.99 on a pound of these babies. But since you’ll probably have to pay for shipping, get 2 pounds and be grateful that they ship FedEx and you’ll get your dates 2 days later. I ordered on a Thursday afternoon and they arrive by Saturday at noon. Beautiful.

And yes, medjool are great…but they don’t hold a CANDLE to barhi. Best date ever.

…don’t tell Mr. Prevention I said that. 😉

Mr. P and I are on the right my dad isn't looking at the camera!

We are back in Columbus safe and sound. After one insanely delayed flight, our returning flight home was 25 minutes early. Love it. I made it in time for my hockey game last night and on the plane I meal planned for the week after purusing the latest issues of Cooking Light, Bon Appetit, and Food to Live By. I am hitting up the grocery store on my way home from the clinic before teaching tonight, so no plans for tonight but I have meals planned for the rest of the work week!

Weekly Menu: April 4th-7th

  • Monday: no plans other than grocery shopping
  • Tuesday: Linguine with Mussels
  • Wednesday: Thai Chicken Salad
  • Thursday: Sweet Pea Risotto

I am also making Raspberry Corn Muffins from Food to Live By and I still have to share my overnight steel cut oats recipe from last week — YUM!

Question: What’s your favorite healthy snack as of late?

Snack well,

You should shove a piece of chocolate into the date along with the walnut…now I bet that would be the best snack ever!

I am on a date kick too (not sure what kind though…just generic “pitted dates” from the Amish store), I made raw “brownies” with them the other night – delicious!

I’ve never even heard of those, but I do love dates. My favorite are blue cheese-stuffed dates that are then baked. (An even better but far less healthy version: wrap that cheese-stuffed date in bacon before baking.)

I’ve never heard of those dates! I really want to try them.

Have you ever thought of doing a post about food budgeting? I’d love to know more about how your meal plans translate into a grocery budget. I’m trying to keep mine under $75 a week (preferably under $65!) and it’s a challenge!

Dates are amazing! I used up my stash on my last batch of no-bake snack balls. They are so naturally sweet and delicious.

My favorite helathy snack as of late is fruit… and I’m low on it. ๐Ÿ™

Those dates do look really good. Unfortunately dried fruit (including dates) gives me migraines or I would be all over them. Lately, I have been getting back into green monster smoothies for a snack. Warm weather really makes me crave them!

Favorite recipe: Yams with date sauce. 1 cup fresh tangerine juice, 1 cup fresh (hand pitted) Barhi dates, 1/2 stick butter (or a little more tangerine juice if you don’t want dairy). Warm them together in a sauce pan until they melt into a syrup. Add a tiny bit of water or more juice if the mix is too dry or stiff. Pour over baked yams. WOW is that yummy.
