Meyer lemons are still on sale for $1.50/lb at my Kroger. The Kroger I have to pass to get to my house. Several times a day. I currently have 2 lbs in queue…waiting for the mood to strike me to whip up something fabulous and sweet.
Maybe at some point I’ll find a healthier recipe, but today’s not that day.
I blame Chef Dennis. The man has great taste in food, and the dessert recipes he posts are seriously over the top. And since I have zero baking ability, dessert recipes that require no baking are made for me.
Besides, gelato holds a special place in my heart. Gelato takes me back to the summer of 2008 when I lived in Italy with Mr. Prevention. We frequented the gelaterias and all of their flavors, many of which were citrus and fresh fruit.
Okay, maybe not quite. But I happened to have heavy whipping cream, Meyer lemons, and a craving for a sweet, cold dessert. Clearly, there was no decision to be made. Meyer Lemon Gelato it was!
Meyer Lemon Gelato from Ask Chef Dennis
1 cup Meyer lemon juice (about 6-7 lemons)
zest from one Meyer lemon
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk (I used 1%)
1 cup heavy cream
1/8 tsp salt
Using a micro planer or a very fine grater, zest one Meyer lemon.
Cut lemons in half and juice them, straining out all the seeds.
Add the cream, milk, lemon juice, zest, sugar, and salt together and using a wire whisk, mix until the sugar is dissolved.
Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze following the manufacturer’s instruction (about 20-30 minutes). Transfer gelato to a container to freeze until served.

Result: Tart with a unique mouth feel – different than ice cream in the take-me-back-to-Italy kind of way :). With an ice cream maker, recipes don’t get much easier than this. I can’t wait to make this on a hot summer evening and get every last, melted drop![/print_this]
