Hard to believe it was 3 years ago today I was sitting in Tulsa, unemployed, deciding to start this blog. I don’t think I had ever read a blog, much less written one. But here I am…here we are! Some people actually read this thing!
My mom and I were talking the other day and she had the suggestion that I should put “points” on my blog to represent the Weight Watchers out there. I quickly struck down her idea for a lot of reasons, but mainly because I’m a Registered Dietitian and I stand behind whole foods and a balanced diet — a lifestyle, if you will. It’s not about “what’s the lowest in points” (I’ve been there, I’ve done that, and it didn’t work long-term) — it’s about what food can do for you.
Does it taste good? Does it make you happy? Does it fit within your budget? Can you find the ingredients? Heck, can you pronounce the ingredients?
Nutrition is still a very new science. We know less about nutrition than astronomy or geology and so on. As I’ve learned more about nutrition, I’ve changed the way I eat. I think this blog represents those changes and my priorities with food and nutrition have shifted some over time.
You can (and maybe have) read all about my food philosophy. My goal in hitting “Publish” on this blog holds steadfast – I want EVERYONE to know that eating healthy food can be absolutely delicious.
So here this blog goes…from Tulsa to Ohio, and in just a few days, on to Michigan, making this blog my longest lasting “job”. However, this isn’t a job…it’s a passion. It’s something I love and adore. If it were a job, I would’ve quit and/or gone bankrupt long ago! This blog feeds me, literally and figuratively. Thank you for joining in for the ride! Or should I say feast? 😉

I’d be interested in hearing a bit more about why WW didn’t work for you long term–email or on the blog. I’m on it for my second time and if I can learn anything from you, I would love it! I figured it was a good way to lose the weight I desperately need to get off, but the whole idea of maintaining a healthy weight is fuzzy for me. I guess I need to start thinking about it before I get there!

I just bought another can of spray this past weekend and thought to myself that I really shouldn’t buy that anymore. I agree with you about the points. It’s amazing how my own ideas about nutrition have changed in the past years. Even in college we were taught calories were calories and lowest calories = weight loss. I’ve come to realize even for myself that that doesn’t work. I’ve done better maintaining my own weight by focusing on eating quality foods (in proper quantities) and focusing on food that tastes great!

I have a question about the Misto. I’ve had one for a long time, but we gave up using it because it seemed to get gummed up and wouldn’t work. Is there a trick to keeping it flowing well? We actually have two and after using a balsamic dressing in a spray bottle while visiting my family I’m thinking about fill one with balsamic for more control when just quickly dressing some greens as an easy side.
I’d be very stoked to get the popsicle molds, but I wouldn’t mind a second donut pan either. We’ve been enjoying your baked donut recipes.

I am addicted to fresh fruit smoothies, and the summer is warming up, and I think it would be fantastic to have cold fruit popsicles ready in the fridge. As for what I want??? All of them of course!! I’ve NEVER heard of the misto but that is so cool….I was literally just thinking now that I for sure what the Popsicle mold (and need to fit it into our budget) to make my own healthy popsicles…same goes for the doughnut (Canadian spelling 😉 )pan!

Happy Blog Birthday! I’m a fairly new reader, only about three or four months now, but I really enjoy and appreciate all the work you put into your posts. Love, love, love the nutrition info you include in every recipe. Also, I’ve learned a few new things…like the difference in deli counter lunchmeat vs prepackaged lunchmeat. I don’t buy that much lunchmeat, but I do go for the deli counter kind now when I do. I’ve never seen a Misto before, but it looks like a great tool I’d like to have.
