Perfect Iced Coffee

My patient load is very sporadic at work, but yesterday I had rapid fire patients in the afternoon. It was quite the challenge, especially when some show up early and others show up late. My last patient of the day recently made a change that was praise-worthy – he had quit drinking two 2-liters a day of Mountain Dew. For the record, the worst I’ve heard is 4 gallons a day of Oklahoma sweet tea.

It’s still shocking to me after several years as an RD how much junk people drink on a daily basis. And the truth is, people truly don’t understand the negative impact high-calorie, sugary beverages have on their weight and health.

Me, personally? My rule of thumb with beverages is that unless it’s a bit of cream in my coffee, a cold beer, or a glass of wine on occasion, it’s not worth the calories. My everyday, all-day beverages are water or unsweetened tea. Given this, I’m actually a self-proclaimed beverage snob.

I like very bold beverages. STRONG coffee. Bitter beers like IPA’s. Strong-brewed teas. Bold, smooth, dry Chianti.

I don’t mess around with my flavors!

When we moved from Ohio I always joked that I would miss Tim Horton’s coffee more than anything (except Donna, Christin, Gina, and my old students, that is). It has taken me over a year in Michigan to find coffee I actually love. Sadly, however, it is not in the form of a drive-thru on my way to work…but, it works. Biggby makes a Michigan Cherry Bean that has been the light of my life lately (it’s the little things).

I’ve also finally learned how to make REALLY good iced coffee. If you’re an iced coffee lover like me…rejoice. This is the real deal. A million times better than my hot brew which I’d throw in the fridge for later. Bleck.

The real deal. I don't love a French press for hot coffee, but for iced...perfect. Enjoy!
Ingredients
  • ¼ to ⅓ cup of your favorite coffee beans, ground
  • 1½ cups cold water
  • French press
Instructions
  1. Place grounds in a French press and add cold water; stir with a spoon. Pull the press' plunger all the way up and place the lid on the French press.
  2. Refrigerate overnight. In the morning, plunge the coffee and serve.

I love iced coffee! I also feel your pain about Tim Hortons. I’m a bit of an addict myself. It’s just too easy to stop through their drive-thru on the way to work! Happy Friday! πŸ™‚

i feel the same way about beverage calories – if its not fully satisfying, I dont want that sugar in my case. I need to invest in a French press now because i love cold coffee

I agree about beverage choices! Coffee with a splash of raw milk is my morning ritual. Your iced coffee sounds amazingly strong, the way I like it!

I use either a splash of low fat milk or some Coffee Mate if I’m feeling sinful πŸ˜‰ I just look to be sure I buy a product without trans fat…it pops up in coffee creamers all the time. πŸ™

Since you’re in Michigan Nicole, you must try Water Street Coffee Joint’s coffee the next time you’re in the Kalamazoo area! Lots of great choices and locally roasted.

I’ve been using my new French press for cold brew coffee too. It’s super convenient! So convenient in fact that I’m trying really hard to only drink coffee when I don’t need the caffeine, hoping that it’ll prevent me from developing a dependence.

Also, Tim Hortons coffee is remarkably good. It explains why you can find one on every street corner in Canada (err.. or at least the Eastern half of Canada). Actually there are a lot of them popping up in Southeastern Michigan though as you drive west on 94 I notice the numbers dwindle.

Also, I think I would be appalled by the amount of sugary beverages people actually consume if I were an RD. Maybe I’m just naive but I didn’t think it possible to drink 2L of pop a day.

Nice Recipe Nicole, Most of the people still know, the French press is only good for hot brew, but it also brews a relaxing cold brew. The only difference is, cold brew takes much time. I saw you use Cold water to brew this, before I too use cold water, but when I tried room temperature water to in French Press, I got better tasting coffee, as normal water coffee gets most flavors from beans fresh and natural oil. Try this out sometime.
