Other than sleepless nights, there’s nothing I don’t love about being a mom. I’ll take the poopy diapers and fussy dinner time hours, or quitting a job I love…because it means more time with my little one. But lately, I most look forward to her dinner time.
We were given the green light at Shea’s 4 months check-up to start cereal around 5 months. So, we did. The first time or two, there was most definitely more food coming back out than there was staying in and by the third attempt, I was pretty sure she wasn’t enjoying the taste and/or texture of the oat cereal. Right, wrong, or indifferent, we graduated her to vegetables.
Shea’s first vegetable (fruit?) was avocado. I wanted to incorporate avocado because it is a fairly neutral taste, smooth texture, and packed with all those good-for-you mono and polyunsaturated fats that are so good for baby’s brain. Breast milk is high in fat, so it makes sense to incorporate fat into her first foods.
But, we didn’t stop there. I quickly graduated her to a combination medley of oat cereal (1 tablespoon dry), breast milk (or formula – 1.25 ounces), avocado (1 tablespoon, mashed), and a veggie (1 tablespoon, pureed) – peas or carrots seem to be preferred. I mix that all together and serve at about room temperature. She…loves it. We’re about a week in to our first foods adventure and the bountiful stained clothing more than makes up for the sheer JOY I get out of feeding Shea dinner. Coupled with that the fact that she’s been sleeping 10 hour stretches again at night and…ahhhh. This phase is fun and can last forever as far as I’m concerned 😉
So fun 🙂

Oh my goodness!! That feeding video was SO cute!! I love how she sucks her thumb! It is so adorable. What a beautiful girl you have ๐ I have a 4 month old and I am excited to see how she reacts to solids!
She is SUCH a cutie! Hilarious how quickly she goes back to her thumb. Can’t wait until I have my own! Love your weekly menus, as always ๐
I loved watching the video! Hannah always put her hand back too when she sucked her thumb, but if she was on my lap, she’d play with my hair while she sucked her thumb – I can’t believe she’s five months old already!
My niece is in about the same place with starting foods, and she loves it just as much. ๐ So delightful! Looking forward to sharing your baby food post with my sister in law. ๐
I can’t wait to see your take on some of these weekly menu items… salmon tacos! Sausage and potato pie! And that italian chopped salad, oh man. It’s 9:36 and I’ m ready for lunch.
Did you leave the hospital?

I am, yes. Going to work part-time at a hospital closer to home.
