Family Friday (vol. 67): Rough Season

As Mark pointed out a few weeks ago, the longest stretch without a “day off” is New Years through Spring Break. I definitely feel it. Thankfully, we’ve got a trip booked to Cancun…just he and I. Countdown ON! The kids are going to be with their grandparents and so, I’m calling this a win-win. Mark and I definitely need some 1:1 time. It will be quickly followed up with nearly 4 days in Cincinnati for my bestie’s wedding so we will have ample kid-free time upcoming. I think this is what has kept me sane the past few weeks.

Piper is in full-on MOMMY ONLY mode. The longest hours of the day are 5pm to 7pm. I get nothing done. I need to just anticipate and accept this. Except, every day I have goals of making dinner, having a family dinner, and just ENJOYING one another. It just hasn’t happened – Piper is generally crying or fussing if she’s not on my hip. I also think she’s HANGRY when I pick her up from daycare which definitely makes matters worse. Most evenings, Mee-Mee, the kids, and I are all in the kitchen (along with the dogs) — me, unpacking the lunches, loading the dishwasher, making dinner, and trying to keep everyone happy. I usually fail and Mee-Mee is in a weird position, too. She’s just trying to help, but there’s not much she can do when the girls (mostly Piper) just want me.

In the past month, Shea has told me she doesn’t love me. I’m often also “not her best friend”. Sigh.

Piper learned the words “no” and “mine” in the same week – lord help me.

The girls are either thick as thieves or at each other’s throats – there’s really nothing in between.

Is now a good time to mention that Mark got a little snip-snip last Friday? Yep, game over. We survived his recovery (just barely) and it is a weird feeling of finality. This is our family. We’re both very good with it, but it’s still a bit sad. If we had family in town, were younger, didn’t struggle to get pregnant, and both weren’t career-focused, I think we would have pursued a larger family. That said, we have our 2 beautiful girls and life is good.

This week, I resumed morning workouts. It wasn’t easy but I was so glad I did it. I’m recommitting. There’s simply NO WAY that evening workouts are going to happen as of late, so mornings it is.

I need to start getting organized for April — between Cancun and Cincinnati trips, I need to get my packing lists in order! I can’t wait! By mid-April, I hope the warmer temps are here and summer is quick to follow!

Nothing on the agenda this weekend – just some family time and a date night tomorrow!

Be well,

My 3 year old (also named Piper!) tells me I’m not her best friend whenever she doesn’t get her way. It made me laugh to know that I wasn’t the only one!
