Family Friday (vol. 73): Coming Up On 2 and 4

The summer, as usual, is zooming by. That means I will soon have a 2-year-old and 4-year-old. That just seems so much older than 1 and 3, doesn’t it? Shea has been pretty insistent on a frog cake though I’m not ever sure what that means. I have my eye on this ombré rosette cake, however. Not that I could do it any justice – I am most definitely not a baker. I’d also be ecstatic to reproduce this Layered Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting!

Shea still has a stupid silly crush on GAVIN. We’ve had the “no boys in bed” chat because she keeps bringing up sleepovers, the fact that she has two pillows, and is a good sharer (arguable). I tell you! It starts young!

Piper continues to be my favorite child (kidding). She tells me “I love you, mama!” ALL THE TIME and also tells me “Good job, mama!” for simple things – buckling her in her car seat, sharing my water, you name it. She also blows me a million kisses as I walk out of her room at night. She’s also a CHAMP napper. Today she nearly slept 4 hours and we had to wake her up to go to the movies.

My kids must have known I needed to crank out work because Shea napped for the first time in….6 months? GLORIOUS. I miss those days. A lot.

Speaking of the movies, we took the kids to see Hotel Transylvania tonight. It was cute. Ironicly, the 3-year-old was very “meh” about the whole thing (but totally dug the popcorn) but the not-quite-2-year-old LOOOVED it! She does love all things TV/movies so I wasn’t surprised, but it was fun to cuddle up with her and watch the movie between her two perky pigtails. Adorbs. She still has these chunky thighs, is crazy ticklish, has icy blue eyes, and eats practically anything. Like I said, favorite child for now.

Mark and I are obsessed with Shameless. When I can’t binge on this show, it’ll be a sad day.

Shea started swim lessons last weekend. She’s in a small group lesson with two 5-year-old boys and she did amazing! She’s a natural and loves the water. She was doing a back float unassisted on day 1! #proudmama

My family is coming tomorrow for a day trip. I’ve got a babysitter arranged for Piper’s nap time so we’re not stuck at the house all afternoon and there’s lots of fun stuff going on. Except, the forecast says rain and thunderstorms and has all week. NOT HAPPY.

Our bathroom isn’t done. We’re 4 weeks in and at this point, I hope to gain some functionality (i.e. toilet) in a week, bath in 2 weeks, and shower in 3 weeks. Time will tell. The job is coming together beautifully, but running general contractor with a full-time job isn’t easy and we have several different contractors involved. Each are crazy busy and so things just haven’t come together as quickly as I was hoping. But, it’s a bathroom and not my kitchen so I have a lot more patience with the whole process. It’s going to be beeeeautiful!

I’m in a total breakfast rut – help! I’m bored with bars and we do smoothies or eggs and chicken sausage regularly. But I need more ideas, please!

OK, rain rain stay away! Happy weekend, everyone!

Be well,

I’m in a rut too…what about yogurt parfaits (the kids could help? You could use some of those awesome berries you’ve been picking!), muffins, pb banana waffles, or avo toast?

Avo toast! YES! Peanut butter banana waffles sound amazing, too! Thank you, Cassie!

We do a lot of overnight/ regular oatmeal here. On days I’m in the office I usually have one of the cups of Bob’s Red Mill oatmeals. They have good nutritional stats and I top them with cashew butter.

I need to get into overnight oats. I never think to make them and I don’t know why! Thanks for the suggestion, Stephanie!
