Family Friday (vol. 121): Vitamin D Dosed and Ready for More!

I really should get my vitamin D level checked. I’m always late to supplementation this time of year and a few weeks back I was just…tired. I somewhat chalked it up to receiving my COVID-19 vaccine, however I truly believe it was vitamin D deficiency. Supplement, you Midwesterners! We need it! After a few weeks of D3 and a quick weekend trip to Florida, I am feeling better. I’m also sleeping better. One night this week, I slept 10:45pm through to 6:30am. It was glorious!

Our weekend trip to Florida was wonderful! Meanwhile, back home, Shea fell asleep on the bus and was taken all the way to the bus depot before the driver realized she was still there. Thankfully my kindergartener knew her address and the driver brought her home. She got home from school that day around 5pm and thought nothing of it, not scared or anything. I find this mostly funny, that sweet girl of mine.

The weather was good for Florida…great if you’re looking at 16 inches or so of snow on a daily basis. It was HUMID and I’m always reminded of how hard it is to run in such weather. Mark and I both squeezed in a morning run one day. We’re both missing running like crazy. We love our Peloton bike, but the cross-training is huge.

So…we re-joined the gym. For a few reasons, honestly. Yes, the treadmill, but also because as of yesterday, both girls are in tennis classes on Thursday afternoons and swimming lessons on Monday afternoons. And because both of these activities take place at the gym, there’s a savings for members. Yes, I realize I’m 100% justifying my (arguably unnecessary) gym membership, but Mark has plans to use the gym while the snow continues to fly and in this pandemic world, we’ll probably utilize the pool on the weekends. I mean, we are STRUGGLING to find things for the girls to do. They’ve turned into little hermits on weekends which is mostly okay, but some variety for all of us would be nice.

Hockey leagues resumed last week and Mark’s team played my team. His team won (and he scored…and had an assist). It was great to see the crew back together and heckle from rink-side as we watched the other games.

The Australian Open is in its final days. I haven’t caught much of it, but I was bummed to see Serena lose in the semis. She did great in the tournament, but I was hoping she could go all the way. I could watch tennis for days and I started 2020 with the hope of spending some time in NYC for a visit to the Peloton studio for a live ride during the US Open so that I could also catch a week or 2 of tennis (kidding but wishful!). Of course that didn’t happen in 2020, but maybe this year!

This first week back from vacation, I kept our meals super simple. We cleared out the freezer some and ate things like pizza made out of sandwich thins with cucumber slices as a side. The girls were thrilled. I did, however, get it together enough to make the famous TikTok pasta…the one with the feta cheese and grape tomatoes. It was really good and very easy! If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’re living under a social media rock. Good for you (seriously). One day I might join you.

I’m in a bit of a reading slump. Mexican Gothic was pretty terrible (consensus of my book club). The Girl with the Louding Voice was solid, but probably not an all-time favorite. I gave it 4 stars. Dad is Fat by Jim Gaffigan was okay. I enjoy him but it was a bit monotone in subject matter. I’m reading a young adult book called Furia for book club this month and so far it’s a little meh for me. Hopefully it picks up!

If you’re a parent and you’re reading this, I’d love to know when you felt like your kids needed you less than you wanted them. There has been a shift over the past few months where the girls will disappear for hours at a time, entertaining themselves. They don’t need or want me like they used to. I can remember longing for this when I had babies 23 months apart, but now that it’s here, I must say, I’m struggling a bit! I want them to come home from school and daycare and tell me all the things, want all my hugs and kisses, but they really don’t want any of it. They don’t crave that time and attention from me and gah…it makes me sad and gives me baby fever, if I’m being honest! (Trust me, that isn’t happening…but it doesn’t stop the feeling!). Parents, am I alone in this? I think it arrived much sooner than I was expecting and it may simply be that our oldest, Shea (6 years old), is SUPER mature. She loves to take charge and does a great job in her big sister role.

They may not outwardly love ME as much, but they definitely love one another. 🙂 This morning, Shea said, “Piper looks so cute in that dress!” Piper said nothing and so I prompted, “Piper, doesn’t Shea look pretty in her dress, too?” and Piper very thoughtfully responds, “Shea always looks cute.” Be still my heart!! This week, Shea was explaining to Piper all about the school bus. She said that even with coronavirus, brothers and sisters can sit in the same seat, so next year when they both ride the bus, Shea is going to let Piper ride next to the window so she could see how fast the bus goes and so that she can get used to it so she doesn’t get scared. Adorbs. At tennis yesterday, there’s 12 (masked) kids in the class, but my 2, always lining up next to one another. They’re buds and I love it. I told my mom this morning, I am very grateful for my girls who are close in age.

My brother and his girlfriend along with my niece are coming shortly. We’re doing our first cousin sleepover. The girls cannot wait. I’m very curious to see where the sleeping takes place. We keep a very regimented, timely, and efficient bedtime routine and my niece is both much younger (just turned 2) and on central time. If they can’t figure out the whole sleep thing by 9pm EST, we’ll have everyone report to their individual beds 🙂 Should be fun! My parents are paying us a visit tomorrow and Mark and I have a date night planned for Saturday. No plans, but just getting out somewhere…hopefully. Michigan is at 25% capacity at restaurants, so it can be a bit tricky!

I will hit the gym on Sunday for a run given that this is a bye week from hockey. If the girls are up for it, I’ll stop by the rink to catch some of the girls’ hockey tournament that’s in town! Ahhh…sweet, sweet weekend! Thanks for arriving!

Be well,

Seriously, I just came back from a quick weekend in FL on 2/16 and made the Tik Tok Pasta last week too. ๐Ÿ™‚ Mexican Gothic is on my to read for an online book club. I just started The Island of Sea Women. Recent reads: Big Summer, The Nightingale, Know My Name, 28 Summers, all good.

Haha, I love it! Where in Florida? I haven’t heard of The Island of Sea Women – definitely looking it up. I’ve read and LOVED The Nightingale, as well as 28 Summers. I’ve heard great things about Know My Name – adding it to my library list now. Thanks for the recommendations ๐Ÿ™‚

We just hit this phase with our newly 6-year old daughter and honestly, I’m not sad about any of it, LOL. She stopped napping a little before the holidays at age 5, so the fact she can entertain herself during the afternoon while her 3-year old sister naps, is great for us. Ours can still be quite needy (in our eyes) at age 6, so the alone time for everyone a bit each afternoon we find important. I am sure though there will come a time when I long to be more apart of things again!

The napping til 5…I’m mind blown! My kids at 3/3.5 were like, pssssh. I’ll be cranky if I wanna! ๐Ÿ™‚ That’s impressive and without the nap, the best of both worlds it sounds like ๐Ÿ˜‰ Mama needs a break, right!?
