Rosé Sangria with Apple and Berries

Perfect for entertaining and the summer days ahead, this rosé sangria takes the boozy best parts of traditional Spanish sangria with a summery, light spin!

WHAT’S NEW?

It has been a wildly productive weekend. In addition to the usual (laundry, meal planning, lunches, etc), I put together a dresser, bedside table, and desk for Shea! We (finally!) got rid of her nursing chair/rocker (I know! About time!), old dresser that was falling apart, and an old bookshelf that we didn’t really have a purpose for now that she reads mostly chapter books from the library. My big girl’s room got a little facelift! My fingers hurt and my back is aching with all of the lifting and hard work!

Aside from all of that, I am very much looking forward to the holiday weekend next weekend – Memorial Day! It’s kind of crazy that it’s upon us! The official kick off to summer and man, I’m ready for it! Beach, boating, pool, and sunshine…let’s go! Also, it’s the kickoff for our busy time of year in terms of hosting guests. We love it and this rose sangria recipe is perfect to make-ahead for a fun time!

ROLL CALL FOR THIS RECIPE

  • Entertaining: If you are hosting a group, this is a recipe that is prepped ahead of time (for best results) or even the day before. Allowing the fruit to soak up the wine and vodka makes for some boozy fruit that is perfect for special occasions…or just because! You can make this in large batches and make it a staple summer cocktail! This cocktail is also perfect for a girl’s night!
  • Summertime: There is nothing more summery when it comes to wine than rosé. It is crisp, mildly sweet, floral, and a beautiful pink hue. I will never say no to a glass of chilled rosé on a hot summer day and I bet you won’t either! This recipe features summer’s fresh berries, fragrant mint, and crisp apple. Bring on the summer celebration!
  • Sangria Lovers: A traditional wine punch that is renowned in Spain, I love the summery twist of a rosé sangria! Unlike many cocktails, this recipe is only mildly sweet with very little added sugar. Most of the flavor is coming from the fruity flavor given off by the fruit and the quality rosé wine. With minimal effort and in preparation for a crowd, this is a refreshing cocktail that will quickly become a fan favorite!

KEY INGREDIENTS AND SUBSTITUTIONS

  • Rosé Wine: I prefer a crisp, floral flavor to the rosé to keep this drink ultra refreshing! That said, you can certainly use a dry bottle of rosé wine with delicate flavor, sweet wine, or any wine: a dry wine (red or white for either white wine sangria or red wine sangria), you can interchange the varieties no problem. There is something about rosé and its distinctive pink color that is so, so fun! Ultimately, you want to use a quality rosé, but the flavors of the fruit will infuse into the wine and the sweetness of the fruit will give off loads of flavor.
  • Vodka: You can use more or less vodka, as you prefer. You can also use a sweeter alcohol, such as triple sec or grand marnier. There’s really no rules here!
  • Lemon Juice: The citrus adds balance to the sweetness of the fruit, wine, and added sugar, creating depth of flavor. While it is both traditional and recommended, you can use more or less depending on your preference…or omit altogether.
  • Berries: You can use whatever combination of berries you prefer or use different fruit entirely. I used sliced strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, however blackberries or any combination of the above works great. Feel free to adjust the amount of berries up or down based on what you prefer.
  • Apple: I think apples is my favorite fruit to have in sangria and that is the same for this easy rosé sangria recipe. The crisp apples soak up the wine and vodka while maintaining their crunch. Feel free to omit or swap in orange slices or lemon slices to add more diversity of fresh fruit or to add a bit of additional tartness. It’s all up to !personal preferences
  • Honey: You can swap in any sweetener you prefer, such as sugar or simple syrup and adjust up or down depending on taste preference and the sweetness of the wine. You can also omit the sweetener altogether if you prefer something a bit more tart.
  • Mint: Do not skip the fresh mint if you can help it! There is no great option for substituting the mint and it helps tie together the flavors beautifully!
  • Club Soda: The rosé and vodka is finished with an effervescent, calorie-free club soda or sparkling water. That said, you can use a clear citrus soda if you prefer a sweet sangria. Good options would include Sprite, 7up, Sierra Mist, or ginger ale. If you prefer to keep things fruitier or prefer less carbonation, you can use a combination of club soda or a clear soda in addition to a fresh fruit juice: pomegranate juice, pineapple juice, or orange juice, for example (I would avoid grapefruit juice). Note: This change will impact the color of the sangria.

NUTRITIONAL MERITS

  • The alcohol content of this recipe is a bit lower than wine itself ounce-for-ounce (hence the larger portion), however each serving, as written, is just shy of 2 alcoholic beverage servings.
  • Drink responsibly. This cocktail is perfect for a girls night, book club, holiday weekend, Mother’s Day and more. Enjoy…in moderation! While tasty, alcohol offers no nutritional value. The fruit adds a bit of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, though!
  • It’s all about balance!

VARIATIONS, STORAGE, AND TIPS

  • Cover with plastic wrap before storing in the fridge.
  • Place ice in individual glasses and top with the sangria and the soaked fruit.
  • You can drizzle the top of each prepared drink with orange liqueur or grand marnier, if you prefer!
  • As stated above, use whatever combination of fruit you prefer.
