911, we have animal emergencies!

On my way to work, I almost hit a steer…

By the time I got my camera out of my REALLY MESSY purse, he had gotten a ways away.

Side note: Yes, I work in the boonies. I do not live in the boonies, however!

Then, I got home from work today to find out Lily had chewed up a plug-in night light. There was glass and plastic bits all over the foyer, but I assumed all was well as she wagged her tail. Fast forward 45 minutes and one puppy nap later, Lily seemed apathetic towards her dinner (Yeaaah, bulldogs INHALE food at lightening speed. Always.). Though, she eventually ate it. All.

Hubby got home from work and consulted the all-knowing Google.com to come across several “credible sources” instructing owners to feed COTTON BALLS to coat the GI tract in order to safely usher glass and other potentially harmful indigestibles out of the system. Silly me, played his partner in crime.

Attempting to choke down a cotton ball

“I don’t eat cotton, hook me up with a sammie. Please.”

Okay. Cotton sammie it is. Also OK-ed by all-knowing Google.com.

“Cotton ball sammies need BBQ sauce. Mama’s homemade kind, please. Thank you.”

“Bleck. Cotton’s too dry. Bread and BBQ only, thank you very much!”

End result: It all projectiles out both ends. The End.

While Google, husband and I, and cotton balls are a bit of a failure this evening, Lily is doing much better. And after a reassuring emergency call placed to the vet, I can now make light of the situation.

In people news, I made an “original” recipe tonight. We’ll call it…

Caprese Linguine

6 ounces uncooked linguine (whole wheat, if desired)
4 ounces fresh mozzarella balls, halved
1/2 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
1/4 cup pesto or basil puree (found in the refrigerated produce section)
2 Tbsp olive oil
1/4 cup pine nuts, if desired
2 cloves of garlic, minced

Directions:

Cook pasta according to directions. Drain. Return pasta to a hot skillet or pot and toss with olive oil, basil or pesto, tomatoes, and mozzarella. Dish up and garnish with pine nuts.

I got this “recipe” idea as a spin off from Joanne’s Olive and Mozzarella Spaghetti. It caught my eye and I’ve been craving pasta ever since!

Question: What’s the last recipe you tried from a foodie blog? I wanna hear about it! Link if you’re a sweetie! 😉

P.S. What’s up with all the onion haters?! I love onions! I was curious about the type of onions people used in cooking; I typically use yellow onions. No reason why, just preference! I agree that red onion is delicious in salads! Mmm mmm! Very interesting responses, though…thanks for answering 🙂

P.P.S. You guys really should try that crock pot lasagna…it reheated beautifully for lunch!

P.P.P.S. Q&A post is next time…email me your nutrition-related question at [email protected]! I’ve got some GREAT Q&A stuff comin’ up!

Poor little guy! I’m posting about caprese pasta soon too. Your version sounds great. Love the addition of pine nuts.

There went your chance at some free (well minus car repairs) grass-fed beef!! ;).

    Glad Lily is okay.

Sorry, I am not inspired in the kitchen ๐Ÿ™

so glad lily is ok, that must have been scary! though the cotton ball fiasco sounds like something that would be hilarious on a sitcom :). wow you do work in the boonies, you almost hit a steer? lol! onion haters? psh! i’m a major onion lover…sorry to anyone who my breath might offend ๐Ÿ˜‰

The last recipe I tried from a foodie blog was pioneer woman’s Fettuccine Alfredo. Not exactly the healthiest thing on the planet.

OMG, craziness with the animals. I know how you feel about hitting things on the way to work…and trying to take pics at the same time. I often have to pass 20-30 cows at a time moving fields. That is the most common excuse for late to work around here. There isn’t much you can do. Your pasta dish looks great. One of my fave combos. As for recipes, we are working on our cookbooks right now, but I have seen tons I want to make from blogs.

What an eventful day! Glad to hear your dog is ok though.
These pasta look great! I made an identical dish ages ago and now that I see it again I can’t wait to have it again! I love how the mozzarella gets all gooey.
The last thing I’ve made were chocolate chip balls – recipe by Averie –>http://www.loveveggiesandyoga.com

I can’t believe you encountered a steer! I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a steer in real life.

I’m sorry Lily had such a traumatic experience! My dog ate chocolate once and I went insane with worry so I know how you must have felt. Glad to hear she’s doing better.

And glad to hear you liked the pasta! Thanks for sweet shout-out. I really love your addition of pine nuts…they never fail to add that little extra something to a dish. I make food from other blogs constantly. And I’m definitely going to have to try that crockpot lasagna.

I would have been crazy if Shane had munched on glass. He licks the road sometimes when we are outside and that drives me nuts.
I’m SO glad Lily is ok. That must have been scary. I don’t think I’d eat a cottonball sammy either – glass, or no glass.

So you noticed there are a lot of onion haters out there as well? I don’t like raw onions and can understand where everyone is coming from on that front, but caramelized onions! I’ll eat like candy.
The best two items to put into ANY dish in my book are caramelized onions and sundried tomatoes. So Sweet!

Poor Lily! Cotton balls are an interesting remedy! That makes me think of Elf when he eats cotton balls at the doctor’s office.

The last bloggie recipe I made was Fitnessista’s Almond Butter Chocolate Chip cookies. They were great! http://fitnessista.com/?p=2152

  11. January 22, 2010 / 6:38 am

Lily is absolutely adorable!!!! SO CUTE!!! And, agreed on the love for on onions–nothing than caramelized or grilled white or yellow onions! YUM!!!! Good stuff lady! xxoo

  12. January 22, 2010 / 6:40 am

Ha-ha! My comment looks like gibberish! Been a LONG week! Meant “nothing better than caramelized or grilled white or yellow onions” and “love for onions” …oh boy–TGIF!!!!

  13. January 22, 2010 / 7:06 am

OH WEIRD!! So Google said to feed the dog cotton balls?!?! So strange. That’s something I never would have thought of (obviously)…I’m glad she’s ok!

I can’t eat onion because it’s on my FODMAPS list (high fructan content I guess), but I love them. This dish you made sounds fabulous! The last food I made from a foodie blog was crispy eggplant form Shannon’s blog, but I also made YOUR veggie spray…does that count?!

  14. January 22, 2010 / 7:51 am

oh that pasta dish looks so fresh and full of flavor!

  15. January 22, 2010 / 7:59 am

hope lilly is doing better! My dog loves to chew on electrical cords, too and it scares me so badly! We crate her when we are gone so she can’t get into anything that could hurt her.

Love your pasta dish! I make a cold variety of caprese salad in the summer. I basically combine rotini pasta with mozzarella, halved grape tomatoes and basil with a little olive oil and garlic. served cold of course!

Aww hope lily is feeling better!

I find it interesting that you work in the boonies, but not in the city, as opposed to the opposite way around! Sounds like quite the animal-filled day. I can’t imagine trying to get my dog to eat cotton balls. My dog does eat strange things, like broccoli…so I’m assuming you slather on some BBQ sauce and my dog would eat it too. I’m surprised when people tell me they don’t like onions. Onions are in practically every non-breakfast dish! Have you tried Vadallia on salads? That’s my favorite salad onion because they’re a tad sweeter and less potent when raw.

  18. January 22, 2010 / 9:46 am

eeck that’s scary! But cotton balls, huh.. interesting. By the way, he is sooo cute. I’ve always wanted a dog, and I know my cat killer would love it, but I’ve restrained myself until I’m in a more settled place in my life. Have a great day!

  19. January 22, 2010 / 9:50 am

I LOVE onions too…. They are the perfect addition to salads, sandwiches, stir fries…. mmm….
Oh and your linguine look DELICIOUS. I could definitely have a plate right now and I’m not even hungry!
Hope you migraine goes away and you have time to workout today. I’m going to try to go train legs right now.

  20. January 22, 2010 / 9:59 am

OMG Thank god Lily is okay!!!! I’m sorry that this happened to her but I am so happy that we got so many pictures today “woooohoooooo”

Btw one time when Koko was a puppy, He pooped out the Longest needle EVER! Know one even knew he ate it…damn puppies lol

  21. January 22, 2010 / 9:59 am

    no one*

  22. January 22, 2010 / 10:14 am

Glad everything turned out okay with Lily! I get real worried when my dog eats strange items… like pieces of leather or string we find later in not so pretty places. Pets are funny creatures ๐Ÿ™‚

I tried Marla’s smoked salmon feta couscous not too long ago and both the hubbie and I loved it! http://www.familyfreshcooking.com/blog/2010/01/09/smoked-salmon-feta-couscous/

So many bloggies are crazy creative and come up with delish and healthy meals that I just can’t wait to try. Your Caprese Linguine looks super tasty too, I heart fresh mozzarella.

  23. January 22, 2010 / 10:55 am

    Hope Lily feels better!

That pasta looks amazing – all my favorite flavors in one.

I LOVE red onions – unless a recipe calls for another one, I always use red.

  24. January 22, 2010 / 11:50 am

I want to try that crock pot lasagna with eggplant instead of noodles (since I can’t eat gluten). I’ve made it in the over, but I bet it would work in the crock pot too, just like your lasagna.

Poor Lily! It makes for a funny story, but it sure is scary at the time!

Nice thought! Egg plant would be great in this recipe!

  25. January 22, 2010 / 1:00 pm

I’m glad Lily is feeling better.
I think the last recipe I made from a blog was your spinach alfredo. That recipe is a keeper for sure!
Your pasta looks delish! I got some pesto from my mom that she received in a gift basket. I might have to make a meal with it soon.

  26. January 22, 2010 / 1:02 pm

Oh, no – thank goodness Lily is okay!! And “make light” of the situation….is that a pun? ๐Ÿ˜‰

The most recent thing I made from a food bloggie is this casserole from HomeCookedEm:

    http://thebalancebroad.wordpress.com/2010/01/21/a-new-chicken-casserole/

    AMAZING!

I love onions! Okay, not red onions. But I loved diced onions in dishes. And garlic. Basically, all things that make your breath smell funky. ๐Ÿ™‚

Pun! Hahaha! That totally made my day! My Zevia came out my nose when I read it on my phone over lunch! : )

  27. January 22, 2010 / 1:16 pm

I know it must have been scary for you, but I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw the picture of the cottonball sandwich! I’m glad Lily is ok.

  28. January 22, 2010 / 1:20 pm

Oh poor puppy! I’m glad he’s okay. What a scary experience!

  29. January 22, 2010 / 2:35 pm

Poor doggie ๐Ÿ™ The pasta looks really good, I will definitely have to try that as caprese salad is one of my favourites

  30. January 22, 2010 / 3:08 pm

Glad your baby’s ok!! That is so scary though. We got home one night to find our trashcan turned on its side. Andrew remembered he’d put turkey bones in there. The dogs had eaten them!! I started crying b/c I knew bones can splinter and hurt them and even kill dogs. I saw that cotton ball trick on google too, but was too scared to try it. We just kept a close eye on them and they were fine. I think most of the times, dogs can handle much more than we realize.

Your linguine looks so fancy and delicious!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  31. January 22, 2010 / 3:56 pm

i <3 onions too!! despite the breath thing..they ARE AWESOME!
    your doggie is adorable!!

  32. January 22, 2010 / 5:57 pm

I’m glad she’s okay. You’d think she’d like the cotton ball if she liked the night light!

  33. January 22, 2010 / 7:44 pm

oh poor puppy and great solution lovely pasta

    love Rebecca

  34. January 22, 2010 / 10:13 pm

I made several versions of kale chips, all inspired by different blogs. And I love them all.

You caprese linguine sound absolutely fabulous!!!

  35. January 23, 2010 / 3:28 pm

Awww, poor Lily…I’m glad she’s ok! Your linguine dish looks super satisfying and delish!

P.S. I seriously LOVE onions, and I’m always surprised when someone tells me they can’t stand them! ๐Ÿ™‚ But then I guess maybe some things that I like would gross out other people, lol!
