Chili Taste Test

High-five, self! I mean…high-five Tiffany and Josh who graciously shared with me this bestest ever chili recipe!

“Josh and Tiffany’s Chili”

Main Batch
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 lb ground turkey, lean
1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast, chunked
14 ounces low-sodium beef broth
8 ounces tomato sauce
1 large green pepper, diced
1/2 large sweet onion, diced

Batch One
1 Tbsp onion powder
2 Tbsp garlic powder
1 jalapeno, diced
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
2 1 chicken bouillon cubes
2 1 beef bouillon cubes
1 can kidney beans, drained

Batch Two
5 Tbsp chili powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
2 tsp ground cumin
1/4 tsp brown sugar

Batch Three
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
2 tsp chili powder
1 1/2 tsp ground cumin

In a large heavy bottom pot, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the meat, pepper, and onion and cook until meat is browned. Drain off drippings. Add the rest of the main batch and simmer for 1 hour. Add all of the ingredients from Batch One, stir and simmer for 35 minutes. Add Batch Two to the pot and cook for an additional 20 minutes, stirring often. Add Batch Three and cook for 10 more minutes before serving.

This is a very hearty, bold, meaty chili — typically, a male-pleaser 🙂 But chili is one of those dishes that different people like different ways! The consensus at work was all good! The staff really enjoyed the recipe and several stated they would make it at home!

Question: What meat or protein do you prefer best in a chili? Do you prefer more meat? Beans? Tomatoes? Something else?

I like chili all different ways, but perhaps my favorite I have had was one made with smoked strips of beef, rather than ground beef. It added a really neat flavor.

I think my fave chili has a lot of beans and tomatoes, easy on the meat (ground turkey). This recipe looks great!

I love lots of beans in my chili. I often don’t even put meat (although I must admit that it tastes much better with lean, not extra lean, ground beef)
My husband makes the spiciest chili you’ll ever eat. It’s soooo good.

Lots and lots of beans and make it Hot-Hot-Hot! I know everyone is thinking…”oh my gosh! the repercussions!”. As long as you don’t have to go for a long run anytime after eating it, it’s the best! ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve actually been enjoying my chili w/o meat lately. I did ground turkey though so making a new batch this week and it’s going to be HOTTER! Need the sinuses to be running ๐Ÿ™‚

I prefer my chili with ground turkey but I add 3 different types of beans as well as a lot of tomatoes to the mix.

I just found your blog and couldn’t be happier to see the first post is about chili, one of my favorite meals to cook in the dead of winter. We made a nice big pot for the super bowl and it didn’t last long. I’ll give your recipe a try next time around.

Well, since I’m married to Daniel Boone, we make our chili with ground venison and lots of beans. Sometimes we put chunks of steak in there too – that adds a nice texture! During the winter we eat chili at least once a week – as a matter of fact, I think tonight might just be chili night!! ๐Ÿ™‚

I love chicken and LOTS of beans in my chili!! Andrew makes a really good, spicy chili with lots of veggies in it. I request it often!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. February 11, 2010 / 4:01 pm

What a fun idea! I prefer my chili to be heavy on the veggies, and somewhat heavy on the beans. Although, I also love lentils in my chili.

  15. February 11, 2010 / 4:09 pm

I prefer bold, hearty chili. Thanks for sharing the recipe; I should make some soon because it has been really cold in New Orleans the last few days!

  19. February 11, 2010 / 6:17 pm

I made a meatless chili that turned out really good. There were tons of beans in it so it was still very hearty.
I love trying new recipes..I’ll have to try this one out! Thanks!

  20. February 11, 2010 / 7:03 pm

I like beans and corn! Cheese crumbled on top is a plus, too. Not a huge ground beef/turkey fan.

  21. February 11, 2010 / 8:05 pm

I actually haven’t had chili in a long time. I HAVE to have some kind of meat in there. Otherwise, it just tastes so bland! But I like beans, too!

Awesome chili recipe! I love turkey in my chili and lotsa beans! And, of course I have to add a dollop of Greek yogurt…hmm! Thanks for sharing this amazing recipe!

BTW, my camera is a point and shoot. It’s a Canon PowerShot SD870 IS. It takes some pretty good pics – but I always have to take 100’s!

  24. February 11, 2010 / 9:27 pm

I prefer lean ground turkey. I toss in just a little beef bullion to give it the right flavor and Voila!

  25. February 12, 2010 / 1:31 am

That looks really yum,….Happy valentines day nicole and have a great weekend as well..enjoy & take care

  26. February 12, 2010 / 6:07 am

I’ve never made a chili that takes so many steps and such a long time to simmer–I bet that lets the flavor develop beautifully & makes it really stand out! I can hear a bowl calling my name now with some cornbread for dipping–yum!

  27. February 12, 2010 / 6:40 am

Oh my gosh that looks so hearty and warming. Y’know I’ve never been a chili fan but could totally see myself now – I love lean beef…but a hearty bowl with beans and cheese sounds good!

  28. February 12, 2010 / 8:27 am

I love chili, make it often. Such a well balanced meal. I love ground bison in ours, but really any lean protein will do. I do like a mix of meat and beans.

  29. February 12, 2010 / 11:35 am

Our favorite chili – and it’s a crowd-pleaser too- is made with ground turkey, black beans, pumpkin puree, and cinnamon! (among other things of course!)
