ER

No food today, because I haven’t been eating much…or been at my computer much.

Wednesday at 2am I awoke with some pretty severe nausea. After antacids failed, I assumed food poisoning…possibly because I lectured about food borne illness in class on Wednesday? Who knows, but there was not much sleeping going on. By 4am, the abdominal pain worsened and the pain started shooting around my right side and radiating up my back.

I went to work and plowed through most of the day. By 2pm, I left to go to an urgent care after giving up on my primary care for an appointment. Urgent care suspected a kidney stone, appendicitis, or gallbladder. They didn’t have the imaging equipment to treat me, and so they sent me to the ER.

I got to the ER, got an IV (after several – oww – attempts). They did blood work, an ultrasound, and a CT. And luckily, they gave me some IV dilaudid for pain and protonix for the abdominal pain.

They ruled out any organ and the ER doctor settled on “esophageal spasm” as my diagnosis, with a bit of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) thrown in there. The really bizarre thing is, I’ve never had any reflux symptoms…ever! That one threw me for a loop. But I will tell you, esophageal spasms are painful and they sent me home with some very strong painkillers in case I have any future attacks.

If the pain doesn’t subside or the symptoms persist, I am supposed to go to a gastroenterologist and get scoped. So here’s hoping this is it. My pain was most similar to labor pains (not that I would know, but that’s what my nurses kept saying) and most everyone assumed it to be a kidney stone or my gallbladder. But I am glad to escape a surgery and losing any organs. 😀

I am feeling 70% better today, but definitely babying my stomach and my intake. Back to regularly scheduled blogging soon! Promise!

Have a great weekend!

Ah, dilaudid – my husbands favorite pain killer! That and protonix were his lifeline while in the hospital.

I am glad its nothing too serious and hope you are back to normal soon – have as good a weekend as you can!

    Hugs!

Get well soon! Maybe you can make some great chicken noodle soup next to heal. Or Mr. P can?

Oh no! With right upper quadrant pain I would have thought gall bladder or pancreas for sure but I’m so glad it’s neither of those things! Beware chocolate, chili, and citrus fruits. Or at least eat in moderation!
