I was on the red eye back to Tulsa last night (yuck!). I have a feeling after a mere 4 hours in the office last week due to the conference in San Jose and my doctor’s appointment, this week is going to be brutal! I was silly and checked my schedule for this week and next before leaving for the weekend and I have 16 patients on my schedule every day for the next 2 weeks. As in, no open slots! ::downing coffee::
Before I left Chicago, I knew I needed a game plan. I’ve had a few days to process my “diagnosis” (to be confirmed on Friday with an ultrasound), and I’m ready to do what it takes. Home was hard…restaurants, friends, etc. I mean, do you know how hard it is to say to Ron Pope and flan for this girl? But that’s reality and I made it work with my carbohydrate-controlled diet (you won’t hear me call it “low-carb” because it’s not).
I meal planned for the week and made a grocery list so that I can head to the grocery store after work today. It has been at least a week since I’ve been in the kitchen and that makes me sad!! 🙁
But home was just what I needed after having my world rocked with this health scare. My 9-miler was a breeze — I did the 8 minutes of running (5.3-6.0 mph increasing 0.1 every minute) with 2 minutes of walking at 4.0 mph. I finished in 1:42:30 (11:23 min/mi). However, my blood sugar was NOT okay after my run and after some research, running and I may have to call it quits. It appears intense exercise raises my blood sugars not only DURING exercise, but for SEVERAL hours after exercise (thanks to hormones like glucagon and epinepherine for any nerds or curious minds out there). So frustrating! Just when you think you’re doing something right… Again, I can’t help but feel like this is a bad joke considering my DO What You DON’T Challenge goals were to increase my yoga/Pilates and weight lifting! Thank goodness this month has taught me to tolerate those activities 😉
Pictures from home:
Family dinner…salad included 🙂 Mmmm!
I poached eggs for the first time!
My brother modeling his breakfast sandwich – hash brown, egg, and turkey bacon (loco!)
Celebrating Grannie’s 87th and Dad’s 65th birthdays!
Mom and lil brother at dad’s birthday dinner
Question: Have you ever poached an egg before?
Random Questions: How often do you get to see your family? How far do you live from your parents? How many brothers and sisters do you have?
Thank you again for all of your support with this PCOS business. I have received so many emails from readers, family, family friends, and complete strangers who have made this news so much easier to bear. Thank you, thank you. 😀
Hope everyone had an excellent weekend! Have a wonderful week! 🙂
Be well,
Such a cute family Nicole! Hope you had a great weekend!
I can’t believe I’m going to admit this, but I’ve never poached an egg!
I LOVE poached eggs. I also have the exact same egg poacher.
I see my parents every day (except when my dads out of town) since I leave my dog at their house during the day. My brother on the other hand . . . well I havent spoken to him in over a year. Its pretty awkward at family functions.
I’m sorry you’re having such trouble!
I actually love weight training but HATE running. ๐
I’ve never poached an egg. Eggs and I don’t agree with each other. ๐
Seeing as I live at home, I see my family every day. Sometimes it’s nice, sometimes it’s not. ๐ I have one older sister who’s 18 and that’s it. I’ve always wanted a brother for some reason… o.O
*live at home with my family
I haven’t ever poached an egg before although I have an egg poacher (thank you wedding) haha! Maybe I will try one of these days! ๐
That’s so funny you were in Chicago too!
We took the cooking class at Heat and Spice which is in Andersonville in the chef’s apartment. It was so fun! I’ve never heard of the Chopping Block, but I’ll keep it in mind for next time I’m in the city.
Poaching an egg is a very simple endeavor. Just don’t overdo it. Glad your had a wonderful weekend. Much respect for the courage you are showing attacking this head-on. Cheers!
I have never poached an egg. It scares me.
Your family is so beautiful! Love the pics.
I live far away from my family ๐ I get to see them twice a year, if I’m lucky. Miss them so much.
I have one Sister and two Brothers.
Sounds like you have a wild week ahead of you…I’m glad you got to enjoy some family time!!!
I live WAY too far from my family (20+ hours), but luckily my academic schedule allows me to visit them more than I would be able to if I had a traditional year-round job. Leaving is always SO hard though ๐
welcome home! i am sorry you are gonna be so busy-it is hard to start a week off with a busy schedule……please let us know what the doc tells you!
Good luck girl. I’ll continue to send my prayers your way. I’ve had to call it quits with running for periods before as well due to health complications, and as a runner this was really tough for me. Yoga was definitely my savior. Hopefully it is able to bring you light as well.
Sorry to hear about your running experience. Iโm sure this will all get better as you get to understand how your body works and what your blood glucose does in response to specific exercises and foods. Hang in there!
I live far from my family (Iโm in VA and theyโre in MA) which means I see them on major holidays and maybe once during the summer. I wish I could see them more, but the drive is so long and flights are expensive!
I am so bad at poaching eggs, what’s that contraption you used?
Hope your monday doesn’t create too much craziness for you, sounds like a full week is ahead for you!
I’ve never poached an egg before… it intimidates me for some reason.
Great pics. I hope everything gets straightened out with BG levels and exercise and all that. I have never poached an egg, but I think I may try soon. My parents live about 2200 miles away and in another country of course. I visit them about every 6 months, although when I was in Vegas it was usually once I year I went home and then once a year they came to me.
Okay, now I am caught up – so you’ll find out officially this Friday??
I too find that my blood sugar raises when I have a strenuous workout – what works for me (obviously not for you since you aren’t on insulin!) is that I eat a higher carb treat – like a piece of sour dough with peanut butter, and only take half the amount of insulin I normally would – then it all checks out.
Today I walked at lunch, and since that is less strenuous, my blood sugar does the opposite. It was 138 before the walk, I ate 1/2 an orange, and 45 minutes later I got back it was 54. So then at lunch I only took 1/2 the amount of insulin I normally would for my planned lunch.
Believe me, it took me a long time to figure this out.
Looks like you had a fun weekend though!

I should find out Friday, yep :-/ Thanks, Biz!
Wow – I hope these next couple of weeks go quickly for you, and hope you’re able to get some rest in there!
Sorry about the running issue. ๐ If it makes you feel better, I haven’t run in a year and I still feel like I’m able to get in great alternative work outs. I know how that feels, though – especially since you seem to really like it!
I have never even HAD a poached egg before! I know, I know….I would love to try one, though.
I’m very lucky in that i live 5 miles from my sisters and their kids and my parents. I see them maybe twice a week, on average?
OMG your brother is just my type!!!!!! MEOW lol
wait so I shouldn’t have intense workouts since I have PCOS? please tell me that I read that wrong! lol
we may need to have a chat

LMAO! I called my brother to tell him you said that ๐ He was totally flattered, it was cute!
Totally depends on exercise and PCOS — everyone is different and I think I’m probably a little abnormal on this one. My insulin resistance is the biggest “symptom” right now ๐
Sorry about not being able to continue running, hun:(
Looks like you had a great time back home.
I used to alllways eat poached eggs. It’s probably my favorite way. But I don’t have an egg poacher currently.
Hope things are going better!
Nope I’ve never poached an egg before. Go you for trying.
I love my parents. I’m very close to them. They live about 1 1/2 hrs from me. And I have a younger brother who turns 21 on Monday!!
Love the family photo! My family is not close by and I see them every other year or so.
I’m so sorry to hear about running…I hope you find an alternative that makes you feel just as happy (hockey perhaps? ๐ ). Happy Birthday to Grannie and Dad! I love poached eggs! It’s weird, when I was a kid that’s the only way my mom made eggs, lol!
I’m sorry about the running, but remember that your health is more important than any run. There are so many other things you can do and I hope this situation is just temporary for you. My thoughts are with you!
I’m so glad you got to spend the weekend with your family! ๐ Love the photos!
I’m realizing (once again) that I shouldn’t run either. My foot just can’t handle it and has been quite painful since I have started again. I honestly think that you’ll learn to love yoga/Pilates and weights. I got serious about weights about a year ago, and I absolutely love lifting now. It makes me feel strong, and it has really changed my body. And there are so many different forms of yoga/Pilates that I’m sure you’ll find something you’ll enjoy. Just keep looking until you’ll find something that you enjoy.
I’ve been thinking of you, and I know that this time must be extremely difficult for you. Stay positive! I know you will! ๐
Keep hangin in there! Remember that you are STRONG and you can handle this. ๐
I’ve never poached an egg before, but I do want to try it out sometime! I love eggs benedict!! ๐
I live about 30-40 minutes away from my parents and we see each other a few times a month. I wish I saw them even more. I have one sister who is 5 years younger than me. She has a food blog too!! ๐ So proud of her!!
Nicole, nice family picture ๐ I poached eggs before, in water and some vinegar ๐
Yes, I am very close to my family…and I am so blessed to have all of them near me ๐
I’m glad you were able to have a good weekend with your family! Making lifestyle changes is definitely hard, especially when it’s something you enjoy and is suppose to be “good” for you, like running.
My family all lives on the west coast and for a long time I was an east coast girl. I moved to Vegas 2 years ago and my family loves having me closer. Now I’m only an hour flight away instead of a whole day of travel!
I was almost completely mesmerized by the word flan. I used to love me some flan from this Brazilian restaurant…
Have not poached an egg before and don’t really care for them except for the occasional quiche.
I’m in close proximity to all sides of my family. Grew up with one brother and I have a few folks that may or may not be siblings. Go figure…
I am, of course, hoping that all will be well for you on the health front.
Man that’s blow if I had to give up running. Hopefully there’s a way around it for you. Nice family!
I could see my folks and my older sister every day or week but don’t even though they live 10 min or less away. My brothers and younger sister live an hour away and quite often only see them at family get togethers. The wedding this week gave me the feeling I shouldn’t let the visits be that low but knowing me it will continue.
I hope all is well with you when you get all the tests done. I’ll be thinking of you – you’ve got a full schedule!!
I’ve never poached an egg in my life – nor have I ever eaten one!!
YOU ARE SO GORGEOUS GIRL! xo
You are always so positive, Nicole, even in difficult times. I’m so glad you were able to spend some QT with your family this weekend – I loved seeing the pictures of you with your family! ๐
My father lives in CO and my sisters live in CA and WY, so I don’t see them much here in CT (in fact, never). It’s a bummer, but at least Peter and his parents are here and I don’t need a plane to see them ๐
Sending blissful thoughts your way xoxo
WHAT a fabulous weekend you got to enjoy. I see my family a few times a semester.. I wish it was more and I really only live 3 hours from them :o( I know it is sad.
You are soooo cute with your family ๐ OK I won’t use the words “low carb” ๐
Wonderful family pic nicole…i get to see my parents just once a year as they live in india and have a younger sister …
Best to you this week Nicole, you’ll make it thru, just remember deep breaths! I’m glad you had a nice time home. I take for granted the fact that I live 25 minutes from my parents and see them at least once per week. I get sad when they are on vacation. I am an only child, which is probably why I love being close to “home”. I’m looking forward to hearing more about your carb-controlled way of eating ๐
poached eggs – yummy!
i have 2 brothers and 1 sister – i am the oldest. I live 1,650 miles from the rest of my family who all live in the same little town i grew up in – back in Alabama, with the exception of my sister – who just moved to Hawaii with her new husband. ๐
love your blog!
