The life-changing maple snickerdoodle

Well, $135 later, 9 friends and loved ones will be the (lucky!) recipients of all of the delicious baked goods I made! But what an event. When I walked into the UPS store, it was chaotic…totally chaotic in its Christmas season madness. UPS, you’re welcome for being your best customer of the day. And to Adam, the kind UPS man who helped me, thank you for your 45 minutes of patience and understanding. All for the love of loved ones and cookies!

But there is ONE cookie that impressed: The Maple Snickerdoodle.

Now, get this. I had NEVER had a snickerdoodle until I made them this year. I know, catch your breath from disbelief. I feel like my Grannie and mother have failed me. As I’ve come to learn, the snickerdoodle is a Christmas CLASSIC…the ultimate Christmas cookie, if you will. And yet, I lived 25 years without the snickerdoodle experience. Truly shocking given the life-changing powers of this cookie.

Do I have your attention yet? Bottom line: make these cookies. Even if you’re a chocolate person, or a peanut butter person, or whatever other genre of cookie person there is…MAKE THESE COOKIES!

Maple Snickerdoodle adapted from Allrecipes.com, as seen on Carrie’s Sweet Life

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 cup (1 stick) margarine butter, softened
1 1/2 cups white sugar, divided*
1 egg
1/4 cup + 3 Tbsp real maple syrup, divided*

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350° F. Stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and cinnamon. Set aside.

In a large bowl, cream together the margarine butter and 1 cup of white sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and 3 tablespoons maple syrup. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients until just mixed. In a small dish, mix together the remaining 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 cup maple syrup. Roll dough into 1 inch balls, and roll the balls in the sugar mixture. Place cookies 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake 8 to 9 minutes in the preheated oven. Cookies will be crackly on top and look wet in the middle. Remove from cookie sheets to cool on wire racks. Yield: 3 dozen.

Result: I think I’ve gushed enough already — make these cookies! 😀 I was going to save the best for last, but I want to ensure ample time for people to add these to their baking plans! Plus, the nutrition stats aren’t shabby! 😀 Enjoy!

I love snickerdoodles, BUT where’s the chocolate?! I gotta have it! hehe, no, I would eat these things any time, any day, my grandma used to make them around the holidays.

The one treat that I always make over the holidays are chocolate dipped cones. Don’t worry Nicole, YOU will be getting some!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ They turned out fantastic this year too. I even make one waffle bowl, and Nick ate it in two seconds.

I too was introduced to snickerdoodles just this year. Where have we been? Sorry love, no good excuse or reason but I’m glad we’ve found them. I gave them the same fabulous review as you. Now I seriously can’t wait to see you (smile). Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I like snickerdoodles, but they’re not a christmas thing for me…
My mom never made them when we were growing up, but we’d have them at school often. And our lunch ladies knew what they were doing- they were soft and chewy and just amazing!

  5. December 9, 2010 / 7:49 am

I’m not a huge snickerdoodle fan, but these look amazing!!

  6. December 9, 2010 / 8:05 am

As soon as I have white sugar and maple syrup in my pantry I’ll be making these.

I usually try to bake with ingredients I already have on hand. It’s harder than cooking with what’s on hand because baking is so precise!

I adore snickerdoodls, these look absolutely amazing, wow! Gush ALL you want, sista ๐Ÿ™‚
I just love any warming, holiday-esque dessert!

I can’t stand going into post offices or UPS at this time of the year! I hate waiting in line for an hour to send stuff out! I’m sure your friends and family will love all the baked goods!

  10. December 9, 2010 / 10:01 am

I absolutely MUST make these today!!! If mine come out good, I will repost on my blog tomorrow. Trying to post a cookie a week! ๐Ÿ™‚ thanks!

I love snickerdoodles, but maple ones sound even better. My holidays aren’t complete without Italian wedding cookies. Or, as my mother affectionately calls them, butter balls. I think you get just how healthy they are.

(p.s. Thanks for passing along the article!)

  12. December 9, 2010 / 10:39 am

Ok, I need to make these cookies! I like snickerdoodles but I’ve never made them…now is the perfect time to fix that! ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. December 9, 2010 / 12:01 pm

Sounds good. I can’t believe you never had a snickerdoodle before. Ryan loves them so maybe I should make these.

My must have treat would be latkes for Hanukkah, since it is just not a holiday without them.

  14. December 9, 2010 / 12:31 pm

I love snickerdoodles!! Theyre so freaking good. I think I just might die if I tasted these! ๐Ÿ™‚

I have not seen snickerdoodles with maple- but am all for a new twist. Seems like my moms version had nutmeg in them, too. Yum!!

  16. December 9, 2010 / 2:40 pm

Prepare to be shocked, but … I have NEVER had snickerdoodles! NEVER! *Gasp!* I know, I know … I have heard of their goodness before, but I’ve never tasted any part of it, except its funny name on my tongue ๐Ÿ™‚ You know what? I’m going to make these tonight. Perfect study break for final exams, and I get a tasty treat to boot!

Those nine individuals receiving your baked goods are nine lucky people indeed! What a great friend you are, Nicole!

OH MY GOSH, I love snickerdoodles but always forget about them for some reason? Definitely copying this recipe right now. You definitely got brownie (or, um, cookie hahaha) points for sending all of those cookies out! You are so sweet to do that!

Christmas wouldn’t be the same without homemade rolled out sugar cookies with LOTS of icing. And oreo truffles….LIFE CHANGING, I tell you! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  18. December 9, 2010 / 4:21 pm

Oh my goodness – you’ve just kicked up snickerdoodles to a whole new level!!
Chex Mix, hands down, my favorite thing to eat/make at Christmas – its the only time of year I indulge without regret! ๐Ÿ˜€

  19. December 9, 2010 / 8:49 pm

I love snickerdoodles, they are always a favorite. I also mailed out packages of baked goods this week-when did mailing things get so expensive?!

  20. December 9, 2010 / 9:45 pm

For a really long time, I thought Snickerdoodles had Snickers in them. I don’t know if I’ve ever had one actually.

  21. December 11, 2010 / 12:11 am

I can’t believe you’d never had a snickerdoodle – I love them any time of year ๐Ÿ™‚ The maple in these version is a fabulous twist!

  22. December 11, 2010 / 12:12 am

    “this” version, LOL!

  23. December 13, 2010 / 8:42 pm

Ooooh these look delicious ๐Ÿ™‚ I might have to get baking ASAP!! I’ve always enjoyed snickerdoodles because my grandmother calls me snickelfritz so it reminds me of my grandmother.

I tried making these today and something seemed wrong, so I looked at the recipe on Allrecipes.com and noticed that I should’ve used a mixture of sugar maple SUGAR not syrup that you have listed in your ingredient list above. I turned out with a gooey mess by trying to roll the balls in sugar and syrup and baking them.

Yep, you’re right…my mistake! However, the recipe posted above is the one I followed and YUM! Best ever! They are a little gooey, but it makes finger-licking all the more fun! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Happy Holidays!

I made this for my cookie exchange this weekend. They were super yummy… but they don’t look as good as they taste (kind of boring). Although, yours looked better than mine did. Thanks for sharing your recipe!

Julie: I totally agree! Snickerdoodles don’t win any beauty contests, but you can’t go wrong with a killer classic! I love how the maple syrup makes them slightly chewy – glad you enjoyed them, too! Happy holidays!

    Hi!
I’m planning to make these scrumptious snickerdoodle cookies as soon as possible.

I didn’t exactly get what you’re supposed to do with the remaining 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 cup maple syrup that you put into a small dish. You’re just supposed to mix it with the rest of the mixture right?

    Thanks for sharing! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Tiana! You actually mix the 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 cup maple syrup and roll the dough balls into the sugar/syrup and toss any remaining sugar/syrup. I hope that makes sense ๐Ÿ™‚

      • August 14, 2012 / 9:38 am

        Thank you SO much! ๐Ÿ˜€
I also wanted to know that since maple syrup is hard to find in the area I live, would pancake syrup or honey be a decent substitute for it?

        Thanks once again! ๐Ÿ™‚

I would use panckae syrup ๐Ÿ™‚

          • August 14, 2012 / 12:10 pm

I managed to get maple syrup finally, but the best I could find was artificially flavoured maple syrup. Hope that’ll be fine. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you so much for your time! ๐Ÿ˜€
