Not Greek? Not good.

When Mr. Prevention and I lived in Tulsa, our house had a huge jetted tub. And every Monday when Mr. P’s BusinessWeek magazine came in the mail, he would grab 2 beers, his magazine, and head for the tub. A routine that annoyed me just a bit…the man could bathe for HOURS..

This week, Mr. Prevention pointed out an article in his BusinessWeek about yogurt. For the past year yogurt sales look like this:

Yoplait: -2%
Fage: +57%
Oikos: +88%
Chobani: +246%

Of course health & fitness bloggers jumped on the Greek yogurt band wagon quite some time ago, but it appears most everyone is now on the Greek yogurt train. Or should I say the Chobani train?

There’s no denying Greek yogurt has its perks. Outside of taste, there’s the added protein and loads of live and active cultures to keep your gut nice and healthy. Plus, most are organic products. The drawback tends to be cost. Yoplait and Dannon have tried to meet the demands of the Greek yogurt trend at a lesser cost, but fall short (taste wise) to brands such as Fage and Chobani. Of course, that is just my opinion. Personally, I buy most any brand because I buy what’s on sale for the week.

A huge thanks to Siggi’s who loaded up my fridge this week with their strained yogurt to try! I am yet to try Siggi’s…can’t wait! 😀

And for those adventures folks out there, you can successfully make Greek yogurt in a yogurt maker or a crock pot. I’ve tried both with great results! 😀 And there is a definite cost savings if you decide to tackle Greek yogurt-making for the long haul.

Aside from Greek yogurt, I have also been enjoying Pumpkin Cream Cheese on my bagel thins for breakfast this week. A few weeks ago I made Pumpkin Butter and I simply mixed equal parts of that delicious pumpkin butter and light cream cheese. Divine! Note: Bring the pumpkin butter and cream cheese close to room temp before combining. Then your cream cheese won’t be chunky like mine. No biggie, it’ll just look prettier 😉

Question: What’s your favorite brand of Greek yogurt?

I think my favorite is Fage, but I’ve heard great things about Siggi’s. I hope I can confirm! 😀

Have a Happy Halloween weekend! Be sure to check-in over the weekend to see pictures from “Pup-A-Ween” at the dog park on Saturday afternoon. Lily is going in her tutu and there’s going to be BOBBING FOR HOT DOGS!!! You’d better bet I’ll be there…with my camera! I can’t wait…haha!

Siggi’s is by far my favorite, but it is very expensive and can only be found at Whole Foods here which is 45 mins away. So I go with Fage!

Oooh, lucky!!! I LOVE Siggi’s, but it’s too expensive for me to buy regularly!

    For some reason I just don’t like Siggi’s. I’m a Fage’ girl ๐Ÿ™‚

    Have a great weekend Nicole!

Definitely Fage, and I’m surprised to see it near the bottom of the list. I’ve never tried Siggi’s…

  5. October 29, 2010 / 8:29 am

Oikos for me! I just wish it wasn’t so expensive!

  6. October 29, 2010 / 8:38 am

My fav is Oikos and Fage. Not fond on Chobani and have not tried Siggi’s.

haha this cracks me up because I feel partially responsible for the increase in Chobani’s sales. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I usually stick with Chobani because it’s cheapest (of the greek yogurts, aside from Dannon/Yoplait’s greek yogurts which I don’t think are quite as good). I would say, though, that Fage is DEFinitely my favorite. However it’s a little more expensive….but sometimes I splurge! I’ve only had one flavor of Siggi’s and didn’t care for that particular flavor – but I’d be curious to try more!

Bobbing for hot dogs?! Now THAT is going to be hilarious. ๐Ÿ™‚

My favorite Greek yogurt is definitely Fage… I just wish they’d come out with an organic line! The pumpkin cream cheese sounds delish – I’ve been enjoying a similar spread made with pumpkin puree, pumpkin butter, laughing cow light cheese wedge, and goat cheese + pumpkin pie spice. YUM!

I like Fage and Chobani, but we tend to only buy Chobani since you can get a pack of 12 of them at Sam’s Club and Costco.

When I used to eat greek yogurt, I remember Fage being the best of the trio. You just can’t beat their 2%

  11. October 29, 2010 / 8:58 am

I have never heard of that yogurt before. Where have I been? That cream cheese spread looks awesome and I cant wait to see pictures of Lily in her costume….how cute!

  12. October 29, 2010 / 9:03 am

I really like Fage, but I haven’t tried any other brands. I hear Chobani is the best, though.

It’s funny because I hated yogurt before I tried Greek yogurt. I was so surprised that I actually liked it since yogurt made my stomach churn for years.

My favorite is fage followed by oikos. For some reason I cant stand Chobani however in my neck of the woods, Chobani is the most widely available at most stores. I have to make a special trip to find by fage and oikos. i am excited to try Aldi’s store brand because it is almost half the price of the others

I like fage….but my neighbor swears by taking regular Dannon yogurt, plain, fat free and putting it into a cheesecloth to drain off the liquid overnight for her “greek” yogurt. She says she can’t tell the difference in taste, only her wallet! I have never tried it, because I am kinda lazy….but if you eat a lot of yogurt, it might be worth trying!

  15. October 29, 2010 / 11:11 am

Oooh, I’ve heard great things about Siggi’s I can’t wait to hear what you think of it! I usually go for Fage too. ๐Ÿ™‚ Can’t wait to see the pics of Lily bobbing for hot dogs, how cute!

My favorite is Fage, however I will often buy whatever is on sale or I have a coupon for that week. I like Chobani a lot too but don’t mind Voskos or even Dannon Greek if nothing else is on sale. Although I like that Oikos is organic, it’s not creamy enough for my taste:)

  17. October 29, 2010 / 12:54 pm

I’m part of the huge 246% jump because I love Chobani and buy it every week even though it’s usually not on sale. Let’s just say I’m picky about my yogurt LOL and I haven’t tried Siggi’s yet though I’ve also heard good things about it

  18. October 29, 2010 / 3:22 pm

I like Fage for plain Greek yogurt and Chobani for flavored Greek yogurt!

  19. October 29, 2010 / 6:27 pm

I have never tried Siggis but have heard good things. Between Chobani and Fage, I would have to say Chobani takes the cake. Soo delicious!!

    Have a great weekend, Nicole!

  20. October 29, 2010 / 10:29 pm

I like Fage the best. I really like the 2% Chobanis too. There is also a local brand here called Atlanta Fresh that is awesome. It’s also awesomely expensive.

  21. November 1, 2010 / 6:16 pm

I buy the packs of fat-free Chobani at Costco and look forward to enjoying one every day at lunch! So yummy and they have 14g of protein!

Thanks for this post! Or should we say, thank you to Mr. Prevention? Excited to try your pumpkin butter and pumpkin cream cheese. Both sound delish!
