You know what’s just a little messed up? It was way nicer in Ohio this past weekend than it was in Vegas.
Last year in April, Vegas was 90 degrees and sunny. We were hanging out at the pool, soaking up the sun. This year, I took 2 jackets, wore them both, and never wore any less clothing than pants and a long-sleeve shirt.
A bit of a bummer, but a blast none-the-less.
At least the weather is warming back up again. Perhaps for good this time?!
Firing up the grill never fails to make dinner time delicious, fast, and an easy clean-up. But as far as what goes on the grill, burgers wouldn’t be my first choice.
I know, I know. Blasphemy!
But burgers are tempting when the toppings pique my interest. Ingredients along the lines of gorgonzola and caramelized onion come to mind.
But then I ran across this recipe. And my apathy towards burgers turned into an urgent need to make these. Stat.
Of course this took no convincing on Mr. Prevention’s end. I seem to have had to pull out all the stops to get him to open up to new recipes lately, but this time…pizza + burgers. No convincing necessary. This recipe combines two of the most favorite, sought-after foods by men and women alike. Yet, the calorie count stays in check…along with all of the other stats.
As for the flavor? Get ready to welcome this burger with open arms into your favorites.

Burgers:
1 1/2 lb 93% lean ground beef
1/2 small onion, grated
1 1/2 tsp steak seasoning
1 1/2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 Tbsp dried Italian herb seasoning
6 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced
6 whole wheat hamburger buns, split and toasted or grilled
1-2 Tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Chunky Pizza Sauce:
1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 (14.5 oz) can no salt added diced tomatoes, undrained
3 Tbsp tomato paste
1/2 tsp dried Italian herb seasoning
1/2 tsp sugar
1/4 tsp salt
Pinch black pepper
Directions:
For the pizza sauce, heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat; add the garlic and cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add the canned tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian herb seasoning, sugar, salt, and pepper, and cook until thickened, about 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Keep warm.
To make the burgers, combine the ground beef, onion, steak seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, and Italian herb seasoning in a large bowl, being careful not to over-mix the meat. Divide the meat into 6 portions and shape each into a patty.
Grill the burgers over medium-high heat until done, about 4 to 5 minutes per side. When the burgers have about 2 minutes left to cook on the second side, spoon about 2-3 tablespoons of Chunky Pizza Sauce on top of each, and then top each with 1 oz of cheese. Cover the grill so the cheese melts.
Transfer the burgers onto the buns and sprinkle the parsley on top of the cheese and serve immediately.

Result: These were DELICIOUS! The Chunky Pizza Sauce makes these burgers what they are, and it’s so simple to make. This meal comes together in about 20 minutes. We served the burgers with veggie skewers (bell pepper, zucchini, onion, mushrooms) that we also threw on the grill. If you love burgers…this is a twist on the traditional you must try! Enjoy!

Be well,
These look great, I am always looking for new variations on burgers.
I’ve been actually dreaming of making a pizza veggie burger since Faith posted these. And now because of you…those dreams are going to start haunting my daydreams as well. I think it’s time to make them!
With the crazy weather we’ve been having in my area (it reached 90 degrees yesterday!) I am more than ready to bring on the grilled food! These burgers look so yummy and so does that shishkabob! ๐
Now that looks GOOD! I can’t wait to get out on the grill more and having options is a good thing! Great pics too!
Thanks for posting this recipe; my husband loves pizza burgers but I haven’t made them because I was concerned about the nutrition. We live in an apartment so I will probably be making these on the skillet but other than adding a bit of EVOO to the skillet hope to follow this recipe exactly.
You are right about the weather – so crazy! Yesterday we had 40 mph winds and nasty rain – boo! Today? High of 60 and no wind – definitely walking today!!
Sorry Nicole – burgers are my #1 choice for grilling! ๐ Those look delicious!
Great burger recipe! And love that kebab served with it
Yum! I’m so glad to get your stamp of approval and nutrition information for these. I had the same recipe bookmarked to try. Thanks ๐
Pizza burgers sound so cool! I love grilling burgers because then Jacob actually does it. Less work for me!
Oh wow! This sounds delicious! Two of my favorite foods combined.
It’s a bummer you didn’t get nicer weather in Vegas. It has been so weird this year.
I am always a fan of burgers!
This is interesting. The pizza and burger fanatics in the house will have fun doing this. Two delicious foods in one recipe. Yummy! Calorie count later. =)
I’m also not usually into burgers, but I know I would love these…everything about them. I can’t wait to fire up the grill!
these look soooo good. I’d take a bite even if I wasn’t in the mood for burgers! My first choice for grilling? I would have to say baby back ribs…I know, I know. Not much healthy about them…but what can I say? I’m a sucker for bbq sauce! Of course, I love ANYTHING grilled!!!
Yes, insane weather. It’s supposed to get really chilly this weekend though..and then…who knows?
Oh this looks fabulous too!
I was pretty bummed when I felt like I couldn’t wear any of the “warm weather” clothes I had packed for our recent trip back to San Diego, like you said, it’s been nicer here in Ohio!! I’m interested to see what Suzhou weather will be like when I head back on Friday…
This burger looks and sounds amazing and I LOOOOVE the idea of the veggie kabob as a healthy side!
I’m so glad you enjoyed the pizza burgers — they were a hit over here too! ๐ Your photos are absolutely stunning!
And yay for awesome weather in Ohio!!
The ground beef is too lean and there’s not enough worcestershire being added to provide sufficient additional moisture. When I’ve got ground beef this lean (usually from having bottom round ground up for me) I’ll add 1-2 ounces of pork sausage just to boost the fat content which allows for both better cooking, a less dry burger and better flavor. When I add worcestershire rather than fat, it’s usually at least 1 tbsp per patty.
That is one tasty looking burger! Great idea!
I saw these when Faith posted them and they’re just as beautiful from your grill! Gotta love grilling weather!
Yes! I have had this recipe bookmarked for a long time. In fact, I’ve made the chunky pizza sauce several times for other uses and I can’t get over how great it is. Last night, I tried the burgers for the first time. I used ground sirloin. Of course, I didn’t notice until I was ready to make dinner that I didn’t have any onions (weird) so I grated a zucchini instead, and added a bunch of dried minced onion and onion powder. Really really great! These were awesome and I will definitely make them again. Thank you!
