Slow Cooker Chicken Tikka Masala


I’m not a girly girl. I mean, I play ice-hockey. My husband will sometimes enter the garage, announce that something stinks, and then confess that he’s not sure whether it’s my hockey equipment or the trash toter. I’m not proud of this, but hey…you can’t exactly wash hockey gear after every wear. And you certainly don’t replace it when it shows wear. Us hockey players bask in our stink — it makes us feel like REAL hockey players. Plus, it can make for some fun pranks…like putting all of your just-worn gear in your coach’s hotel room and heading out for dinner. Three hours later, that room is fuuunky. Hey, I was 15 and played travel hockey with 20 other women…every weekend. We had to make our own fun.

Not only do I play hockey, but I hate shopping, especially with others. I couldn’t care less what my nails look like and I think I’m one of the few women in this world who doesn’t enjoy pedicures. I would rather watch football or basketball than anything else and other than Skinny Pina Coladas, I’ll pass on anything for a beer.


When it comes to cooking, I fit quite perfectly into my “gender role”. I cook mostly from scratch and I meal plan, shop, and do the dishes…every night.

It’s not surprising that when Mr. Prevention’s coworker came over for dinner this week he exclaimed, “Man, Mark…you don’t know how good you’ve got it!” I have to agree. I mean, being the lover of food that I am, the next best thing to cooking and food blogging is having a healthy meal made for me every night…and never doing dishes. Mr. Prevention’s coworker know what’s up!


I am really girly about one thing, however: make-up. I don’t leave the house without it. Maybe to the mailbox, but not the property line.

I ran out of my most favorite eye liner weeks ago and I’ve been waiting for it to arrive in the mail. Finally, a delivery slip surfaced and I need to pick-up the eyeliner from the post office. For several days I failed to leave work by 5 to get to the post office by 5:30. On Tuesday, I was, once again, running late and nearly ran someone off the road (pretty literally) trying to get to the post office by 5:30. I whipped into a parking spot at 5:32 and ran into the building at full speed. I got to the window, panting, and asked for my package. I apologized for coming after business hours and he looked at me funny and said, “No need to run next time, we’re open til 6.” Of course.

I took me and my make-up home to make this meal for Mr. P and his coworker…after freshening up my make-up!



Slow Cooker Chicken Tikka Masala adapted from Real Simple by I Was Born to Cook

1 (15 oz) can diced tomatoes, undrained
1 onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, chopped
2 Tbsp tomato paste
1 1/2 Tbsp garam masala
1/4 tsp salt and pepper
1 1/2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1/2 cup half and half
1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves, chopped


Combine tomatoes, onion, garlic and garam masala, along with salt and pepper, in the crock pot. Place chicken on top and cover. Cook on low for 7-8 hours, or on high for 3-4 hours.

Just before serving, stir light cream into chicken. Top with cilantro. Serve over rice, if desired.

Yield: 4 servings (1 cup each)

Nutrition Information (per serving): 270 calories; 4.8 g. fat; 93 mg. cholesterol; 263 mg. sodium; 13.5 g. carbohydrate; 2.3 g. fiber; 41 g. protein

Result: This was simple and good…not incredible compared to traditional Indian food, but good, very good. I would highly recommend this to someone who loves Indian food but is scared off by all the spices and ingredients. I served this over rice for a low-fat, filling meal. Enjoy!

      Oh, oh! Stila waterproof liner was the one I was talking about. I also love BadGal lash mascara by Benefit and I swear by Covergirl eye shadow. It’s the best! ๐Ÿ™‚

    The reason I made this recipe is because Frank isn’t a fan of Indian food – so it was perfect for him! Like you said, the flavors aren’t as bold as usual. Mark has it REAL good – just like people tell Frank he does, too! ๐Ÿ™‚

    I played ice hockey in high school & the beginning of college, so I can also relate to the stank and hotel ridiculousness ๐Ÿ™‚ I miss it but there isn’t really a good place for me to play anymore.

    I don’t play hockey (but I do weightlift, that’s sorta manly!) and I leave the house almost every day without make-up but otherwise I swear we’re the same person. I can’t think of anything more frustrating than a day spent (read: wasted) shopping and when i seriously need to purchase something specific I have to go alone. I never paint my nails because I spend so much time doing dishes that it would be a waste and I’ve only had a pedicure once and would never do it again.

    And yet I spend about 90% of my time at home in the kitchen.

    Yeah, somebody needs to explain the appeal of manicures and pedicures to me. I mean, I use my hands to get things done; I certainly don’t want to spend time worrying about whether I’m messing up my manicure! And I just don’t have the patience for pedicures–I’d much rather go out on my bike!

    I highly recommend Cooks Illustrated recipe for flatbreads with this sort of recipe – you can make them with whole wheat flour and they are quick, easy and just delicious. If you can’t find the recipe, just email me and I’ll send it to you – cheers
