In case you couldn’t tell, I’m really…REALLY bad at keeping secrets. And there has been some big, exciting changes going on with The Prevention’s.
Let’s go back in time a bit here since I couldn’t say anything until now “publicly”.
First things first, Mr. Prevention was asked to take on a new & bigger role within his company – so a huge congrats to him! This position will be relocating us from right outside Columbus, Ohio to Saint Joseph, Michigan which is 90 minutes right around the tip of Lake Michigan from Chicago. 🙂
The last weekend in March, Mr. Prevention and I drove to Michigan on a Thursday night. He went to work on a Friday and I began house hunting with our realtor. That’s right — we’re moving to Michigan…soon. We spent Friday night catching up with friends in MI and house-hunted all day Saturday before heading back to Ohio Saturday night.
The following weekend, my parents were in town and we celebrated my mom’s birthday.
The next weekend, the second weekend in April, we returned to MI on a Friday, house-hunted on Saturday, and returned Saturday night. Are you seeing a trend? LOTS of car rides (it’s about 4 1/2 hours from our home in Ohio to our new home in Michigan).
The weekend after that we were in Vegas. Delayed flights both directions, crazy time changes…it was one exhausting blast of a weekend.
The week after we were in Vegas, I applied for a job…on a Tuesday morning. I got a call that same Tuesday morning and I was wanted in MI that week to interview. I quickly put in for PTO and got that arranged. I drove up to Michigan on a Thursday night (late) and interviewed on Friday afternoon before heading back that same day. Insanity.
In the midst of all of this, there were several glitches with the house we’re buying in MI (there always are, right?), and with the weekends away and work all week long, I was getting behind on grading. I nearly got caught up with that before Mr. Prevention was on my case to get our current home staged and cleaned for listing.
We got our house listed and spotless. And no bites for the first several days. Worrisome, yes.
Meanwhile, last Tuesday and Wednesday I was back up in Michigan for a second round interview. Things went great. Then I didn’t hear anything for the rest of the week and yesterday, Monday afternoon I finally got a call. I got the job! It is a huge job and I am all sorts of excited…and a bit nervous, too.
The position is as Director of Nutrition Services at a small hospital. I will be overseeing the regulatory and compliance of the kitchen and cafeteria which feeds both patients and staff. I will also be the dietitian for the hospital. In addition, I will also be working to develop and grow the out-patient diabetes program, which, as many of you may recall, is where my passion lies.
This position is huge and I am so, so excited. It sounds as though I am going to have some control over what goes on the menu (it’s not a set menu, so I’ll be able to make changes as I see fit vs. complying with an outside contractor/company), and the employees sound eager to get some healthier options on the menu. I will be reporting to the CFO (oh my!) and I am pretty much so anxious I may have trouble sleeping until I start…which is July 9th.
I love that I get to dabble in a bit of everything with this position. I get my feet wet in food service and management. I still get to be a “dietitian” and keep my clinical skills sharp with patient education and care. AND I get to pursue my CDE (Certified Diabetes Educator credential) and working with the diabetes population I am most passionate about. People who know what I want in a job say this job was tailor made for me, and I have to agree. As far as I can tell, it’s perfect. We shall see!
It was certainly hard to resign from the job I’ve been at for a mere 5 months, but everyone was so understanding and congratulatory. It will be hard to leave more great coworkers and patients…again.
And about this house. It’s…lovely. Let’s start with the kitchen, obviously. It’s not hard to do, but it’s bigger than my current kitchen…probably twice the size. It has a built-in, 6 burner gas range (wasn’t I just complaining about my electric glass top ;)!!) and about 3x the amount of counter space I have now (again, I’m going from next to nothing to probably an average amount of counter space). It has a pantry and wood floors. It isn’t my DREAM kitchen (people who cook as much as I…we have lofty dreams), but it’s wonderful.
The next best thing about our new house is the location. Other than the fact that it’s 90 minutes from Chicago and my family, and 3 hours from Mr. P’s folks in central Illinois, the house has Lake Michigan beach access. We don’t have lake view from the house, but about 100 steps out our front door is Lake Michigan. When I see the beach, I realize how fortunate we are and why they say “location, location, location!” when talking real estate. I have big plans to take-up kayaking! 😀
The master bath has the jetted tub Mr. Prevention was so desperately “needing”. It has got everything we could want or need and then some. We close June 22nd…our movers are coming to Ohio June 18th and 19th. We’ll replace some carpet, lay some hardwood, and paint the last week of June, and officially move in June 29th-ish.
I am feeling blessed and very excited for this next chapter of life!
xo,
Congratulations to both of you, and enjoy that new house. That kitchen sounds awesome! ๐

That is going to be so much more convenient for you to see your family. I know the long drives are really taxing.
Also, that’s a beautiful area (well, most of Michiga is beautiful, really). That’s not far from I94, right? I think we drive by there on the way to visit my sister in Illinois.
Author
Thanks, my dear! Sorry I’ve been MIA…I’m sure you understand. It’s RIGHT off 94. My house is literally 1-1.5 miles (what is that, 2 km? Ha!) off 94!! VISIT TIME!?!?!?
Definitely. We’ll have to coordinate something. I probably won’t be heading that way for a while since my sister is usually here most weekends during the summer, but I’ll keep you posted.
