Christmas Favorites #3: Frosted Sugar Cookies

My kids don’t have school for the next 2 weeks and Christmas Eve is in ONE week. Less than if you don’t count today. BANANAS. It doesn’t even feel like winter yet – my kids went to school without coats one day this week. December in Michigan? So weird.

We’ve crossed off several holiday events from the 2021 list and to each, I take a tin of goodies. You know, all the recipes I’m posting as of late with a few more to come. This dietitian has made a name for herself come Christmastime when it comes to sugar!

Last weekend, we tackled these cookies. Always a favorite among kids, I was pleasantly surprised to see the number of adults who responded on Instagram saying they loved them, too. We had a little playdate and the kids went to town.

Sure, my dining room carpet has a tint of blue from frosting that made it onto the floor by way of dropped cookie. But I mean, my art room doubles as the “art room” and the blue stain simply accompanies all the others! Eye roll. The sprinkles, though…we’ll be finding those until the end of time. The kids had a blast.

And not only them, but me and my friend, too! I was sure to feature some of her frosting and sprinkle handy work on the blog, as promised! Christmas cookies are a labor of love and so much more fun to do with ones you love!

Merry, Merry Christmas!

  • 1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt

  • 4 cups (1 lb) powdered sugar
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • food coloring, optional

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or in a large bowl using a hand mixer, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla, scraping down the sides of the bowl, as needed.
  2. Mix in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight).
  3. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  4. Roll out dough on floured surface to just under 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on parchment-lined baking sheets.
  5. Bake 7 to 9 minutes in preheated oven or until just beginning to turn golden brown at the edges. Allow to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.
  6. For the frosting, mix all ingredients together until well combined. Stir in food coloring, if desired. Frost cookies after they have cooled completely.
