Family Friday (vol. 117): Restless, but Thankful

Today marks day 10 I haven’t gone into work. Plus I’ve got the weekend ahead, so I’m looking to be fully recharged after a 12 day staycation when I return to work on Monday. I may end up working a bit over the weekend or later today because I have a state report that needs to be submitted by end of day on Monday and alas, Monday’s schedule looks pretty tight.

I can’t say I’ve done much of anything overly productive with my time off. The weather has been mild, for the most past, and so I’ve tried to get out some every day. It hasn’t always been easy as the girls have become professional home bodies. The only problem is that they’re not expending enough energy and end up running laps in the house, cackling like crazy people until inevitably, someone ends up hurt. Rinse, repeat.

They needed an extended stretch outside today and so we went for a 2.33 mile hike. There were a few tears from Piper but not much complaining. They both seem pooped after the activity and a plate of Thanksgiving leftovers. We’ll see what the afternoon brings. We’re definitely planning on the park over the weekend – it looks like the sun should be making an appearance both days.

Thanksgiving was a new look for us — a few friends who we’ve been seeing throughout this crazy time. I cooked a feast — turkey, stuffing, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes, green beans and mushrooms, cranberry sauce, pineapple soufflé, and pecan pie and pumpkin bars for dessert. We also added pumpkin roll for dessert from our guests (so good!) and Mark promptly ran to the store for a cherry and lemon pie because my dessert offerings were undesirable for both he and our one other guest. All I can say is the women know what’s up. Sigh.

My Christmas cards are done. My Christmas decorations are up. We’ve made the homemade gifts we’re going to make. The shopping is largely complete…the wrapping, not so much. And I have no idea what Christmas will look like, but I’m trying to keep positive. I truly believe we’re in the 4th quarter of this pandemic!

Illini basketball has started and we’ve been whomping on our opposition the first 2 games. Football has been going better, too. We’ll see how it goes against #2 Ohio State tomorrow. I know my podcast co-host, Gina, will be glad if OSU wins, but we’ll see what happens! It certainly helps to have something to look forward to watching, even if it’s a bit of a different look.

Speaking of podcasts – be sure to enter the $100 Amazon gift card giveaway we have going on! Ends Sunday!

We got a new washer and dryer because we’re adulting like that. Mark is currently setting up his new “at home office” – as in, a big desk (workbench) in our upstairs landing. A new eye sore for every trip up and down the stairs. Perhaps it will force the fort-making into one of the girls’ bedrooms because let me tell you, that can get quite unruly.

It doesn’t feel like a Friday at all but truly, I’m not sure what day it feels like. Work on Monday will be weird, but also welcomed. It won’t be as welcomed as school for both of the girls, but welcomed nonetheless.

I’ve now completed Big Brother (way behind from summer, I know) and Schitt’s Creek (so good!). Seeking my next show to binge on – suggestions welcomed! Also seeking Netflix movie recommendations – I will say, Warrior was good!

Looking for a few book recommendations? I’ve been pounding the pages pretty good lately. Highly recommend both The House in the Cerulean Sea (think Harry Potter-esque in all the best ways) as well as The Hate U Give.

This Instant Pot Wild Rice Soup has been making the rounds as a suggested recipe to make (sans a bit of salt). Anxious to try it!

I think that’s it for today. Happy Black Friday and have a super weekend!

Be well,

I second Queens Gambit and also Virgin River Season 2 is out! I binged it in one day! I haven’t watched it yet but Christmas Chronicles 2 and Jingle Jangle on Netflix are good, too, I heard.
