Family Friday (vol. 22): And, hello, 3rd Trimester!

Happy Friday!

I feel like I talk about pregnancy almost as much as I talk about food. Not only am I a dietitian and talk food at work and on the blog, but ’tis baby season, as well – I am seeing LOTS of mamas at work who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Babies, babies everywhere!

So, what’s new with my little bun and I? She’s definitely growing and time is FLYING.

How far along? 28 weeks, 3 days. I think the above picture is a little too flattering at 28 weeks. Hubby says (and I agree) that my belly has grown quite a bit in the past 10 days or so. It really depends on what I’m wearing how much my belly shows.

Weight gain? Had been 10 lbs up until a few days ago. So currently, about 12 lbs. I will say, I’ve been exercising my tushie off and really trying to control my weight gain. I was overweight to begin my pregnancy and I know the aches and pains will be all the less if I can control the gain. That said, it has become a bit more challenging in most recent weeks.

Workouts? Most days is a 5K, give or take. While I fully realize that my body is becoming accustomed to this workout, it seems to be just the right amount without over-doing it. Sometimes I walk it all, sometimes I jog most of it. On the topic of jogging, however…my jog is hardly a jog. I generally run 11-ish minute miles…my pace these days is closer to 13 min/mile. As baby has grown and the head is down, there’s just a lot of pressure and discomfort that comes with doing much more and some days, that’s why all of my steps are done as walking only. While I’m getting in the miles, I’m listening to my body and adapting appropriately. I still play tennis 1-2x/week – twice on a good week, but I’m still enjoying it very much. My coach hasn’t completely stopped challenging me, it’s moreso during matches that my opposition goes easy on me. I tell them not to, but they don’t listen 😉

What’s to eat? Well, everything. There’s nothing particularly offensive, but my hemoglobin was a little low and so while I haven’t upped beef intake in my diet, I’ve upped the bran cereal and added more leafy greens. Iron is hard to get in. I’ve been loving everything unhealthy, though…particularly s’mores (which has been like a 6 week craving and counting), honey wheat pretzels, soft serve, and fresh fruit crisp. So, basically carbs. 🙂 We have been eating leftovers a bit more, but I’m still trying to cook 3-4 nights/week, as you can see from my weekly menus. I want to start using the grill more just because it’s so darn easy!

How’s the nursery coming along? Wonderfully. I’ve really only got to finish the wall art. I’ve purchased (a lot of…) frames that are antique-y or distressed. It should all come together nicely. The pastel teal walls are gorgeous (I love the curtains I purchased, too – P.S. the bed in that picture is gone, gone, gone…thank you, Craigslist!) and the bedding is absolutely stunning. The glider is delivered, the shag rug is down – yep, it is quite ready for a baby except for some final touches! I’ll take more pictures soon and perhaps even do a blog post on the nursery like I did of Shea’s room.

Aches, pains, and other complaints? Not so many. I definitely have some aches and pains in my back that worsen as the day wears on, but nothing unbearable. I do believe the 2nd trimester was the “fun” one where the baby bump emerges and things truck along pretty smoothly…we’ll see what the rest of this pregnancy brings, but I fully expect the aches and pains – I just not-so-secretly hope they don’t get as bad as they did with Shea.

Sleeping like a baby? Basically, with the exception of my several potty wake-ups. Fortunately, the master bathroom is 6 steps from my side of the bed, so it could be worse. No heartburn or other nighttime issues, however!

How’s hubby hanging in there? Good! I think we are both a little nervous about the balance of 2 under 2…or just 2 kids in general, but it’s not his first rodeo. 🙂 He has one more international trip for work in July and he is then grounded here and on baby watch!

Fears or worries? Two main fears, really. Firstly, I want Shea to have a good transition into being a big sister. She is absolutely in love with seeing babies at her daycare and the staff say she is so gentle and sweet with them…but when it comes to *me* or Mark being with a baby that’s now permanently in our home…I have reservations as to how she’ll adapt. I’m doing some reading on how to ease this transition and I know it will be okay in the end. I am just bracing myself for that feeling of not giving her what she needs while also meeting the needs of the baby. Shea and I spend a LOT of time together and we’re buddies…I know it’ll be challenging for her. And me. Secondly, I’m worried about giving birth…definitely more so than I was the first time. Shea’s birth was absolutely terrible – pain, exhaustion, regrets, staff and midwife issues – I’m just hoping for a better experience, beginning to end. I’m praying for no induction, less pain, a shorter labor (and definitely less than 3 hours of pushing!), and most importantly, skin-to-skin immediately following the birth. Time will tell!

Looking forward to anything? Well, summer! We have a lot of guests coming to visit and I hope I can keep up in the heat. I know September will be here in the blink of an eye!

Name(s)? We can say with near certainty that baby girl will be named Piper Reese. 🙂
